My Top 3 Cruise Experiences After Visiting 50+ Countries and All 7 Continents

As a Travel Advisor, I am often asked a simple question that is surprisingly difficult to answer.

"Of all the places you've travelled, what was your favourite?"

I've now visited more than 50 countries and all seven continents. I've crossed oceans on luxury cruise ships, sailed rivers through the heart of Europe, and explored some of the most remote corners of our planet aboard expedition vessels.

I've been fortunate to experience incredible destinations that many people only dream about.

Yet when I really think about it, three journeys stand above the rest, the ones that come to mind are not because they were the most luxurious, not because they were the most expensive, not because they had the best food or the biggest cabins - they stand out because they fundamentally changed how I viewed the world.

Number One: Antarctica with HX Expeditions

If someone told me I could only take one more trip in my lifetime, I would choose Antarctica.

Without hesitation.

Antarctica is unlike anywhere else on Earth. There are no cities. There are no roads. There are no shopping districts, souvenir stands, or tourist attractions. There is simply nature on a scale that is almost impossible to comprehend.

As your expedition ship navigates through towering icebergs and pristine channels, you quickly realize that you are entering a world that belongs entirely to nature.

The wildlife encounters are extraordinary. Penguins going about their daily lives. Whales surfacing beside your Zodiac. Seals resting on floating ice. Seabirds soaring above dramatic glaciers.

What makes Antarctica special isn't simply seeing wildlife. It's seeing wildlife that has absolutely no fear of humans because humans have never been a significant part of their environment.

The silence is something I will never forget. Standing ashore in Antarctica, you can experience moments where there is almost complete silence except for distant ice cracking or the occasional call of a bird.

In our modern world, that level of quiet simply doesn't exist anymore.

I often tell clients that Antarctica is not a vacation. It's an experience.

Visiting Antarctica changes your perspective on the planet, conservation, climate, and humanity's place within the natural world.

For me, it remains the most awe-inspiring destination I have ever visited.

My second choice surprises many people.

The Nile River is not just a cruise. It is a journey through thousands of years of human civilization.

The Nile itself is fascinating.

While modern Egypt surrounds you, the river often feels timeless. Farmers still work fields much as they have for generations. Traditional feluccas sail the river. Children wave from the riverbanks. Life along the Nile unfolds much as it has for centuries.

The wine culture is extraordinary.
After all, this is the birthplace of Port wine.
The food is exceptional.
The people are welcoming.

And the landscapes rival anything I have seen elsewhere in Europe.

Why I Still Travel With Masks in 2026

Travel has never been safer, easier, or more accessible than it is today. Yet at the same time, travellers are constantly hearing about the latest health concern somewhere in the world.

In recent months alone, we've seen headlines about hantavirus outbreaks, Ebola concerns in parts of Africa, measles cases in various countries, seasonal influenza surges, and ongoing discussions about respiratory illnesses on aircraft and cruise ships.

Despite all of that, I continue to travel frequently and enthusiastically.

I cruise. I fly internationally. I visit airports, hotels, museums, trains, buses, and crowded tourist attractions.

But there is one travel habit that I adopted several years ago and have never abandoned:

I always travel with masks.

Not because I am fearful of travelling.

Not because I expect something bad to happen.

And certainly not because I think people should avoid travel.

I carry masks because they are one of the simplest, lightest, and least expensive travel tools I can pack.

I am sure that some people think I am crazy… But, I don't care. Masks are always with me.

Masks Have Become Part of My Standard Travel Kit

Today, I always keep several masks in my sling bag.

That means they are immediately available if I feel the need to use one at a moment's notice.

I also carry additional masks in my carry-on luggage so I have enough for longer journeys, flights, airports, cruise terminals, trains, or unexpected situations.

Most of the time they stay in the bag and never get used.

But when I need one, I'm glad it's there.

When Do I Put On A Mask?

There isn't a specific rule.

Sometimes it's because I notice several people around me coughing heavily in an airport gate area. Sometimes it's because the passenger beside me on an aircraft appears visibly ill. Sometimes it's because a flight is completely full and I'm sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of other travellers for many hours. Sometimes it's because I'm feeling slightly run down myself and don't want to pick up something that could impact my vacation.

The beauty of carrying masks is that the decision can be made in seconds. I don't need to search for a pharmacy. I don't need to pay airport prices. I simply reach into my bag and put one on.

Travel Exposes Us To More People Than Everyday Life

One reality of travel is that we often encounter more people in a few days than we might normally see in weeks.

Consider a typical international trip. You may encounter people from dozens of countries in airports. You board aircraft carrying hundreds of passengers. You use buses, trains, taxis, ferries, and cruise ships. You visit restaurants, attractions, museums, and public spaces.

Before any international trip, I encourage travellers to think about more than just packing clothes and passports. In fact, 15 Things Travellers Forget Before International Flights highlights many of the small details that can make a big difference to your travel experience.

Most travellers will never experience any health issues during their trip. However, the sheer number of interactions naturally increases exposure to whatever viruses or illnesses may be circulating.

That's simply part of travelling.

Travel Is Still Worth It

It's important not to let headlines discourage you from exploring the world. Every year there are reports about outbreaks somewhere. Most remain localized and never affect the vast majority of travellers. Travel remains one of the most rewarding experiences available. You can explore ancient civilizations, experience different cultures, meet fascinating people, and create memories that last a lifetime.

The goal is not to avoid travel.

The goal is to travel smart.

One quick note about the most recent (May 2026) Hantavirus outbreak on a Dutch-Flagged cruise ship. Health officials now agree and believe that a Dutch couple contracted the Hantavirus BEFORE boarding the cruise ship. Right after the Hantavirus news struck, there were multiple social medial reels that kept popping up on my feed about Norovirus on Cruise Ships and how because of this you should not cruise. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics estimate that cruise ships account for only about 1% of all Norovirus outbreaks reported globally. Why am I highlighting this? News media and now social media “influencers” hype these things up to look worse than they are - in my opinion.

Part of travelling smart is setting yourself up for success from the very beginning of your journey. That's one reason I'm a strong believer that Why Cruise Travellers Should Never Fly In The Same Day As Their Cruise remains one of the most important pieces of advice I can give clients. Reducing stress, delays, and exhaustion helps keep you healthier throughout your trip.

Other Simple Health Precautions I Take

Masks are only one part of my travel routine.

I also:

• Wash my hands frequently.

• Carry hand sanitizer.

• Stay current with recommended vaccinations.

• Purchase comprehensive travel insurance.

• Monitor government travel advisories when appropriate.

• Get adequate rest before long journeys.

• Stay hydrated during flights.

None of these precautions are complicated.

Together, however, they help reduce risk and make travelling more enjoyable.

My Advice To Fellow Travellers

You don't need to be worried about every health headline you read. But you should be prepared.

A few masks weigh almost nothing, take up virtually no space, and cost very little.

Whether you ever use them or not, they provide flexibility and peace of mind when travelling through airports, aircraft cabins, cruise terminals, and other crowded environments.

This is especially true if you're planning a more remote journey such as an Arctic or Antarctic voyage, where preparation becomes even more important.

As for me?

My passport, phone charger, travel insurance documents, and a supply of masks will continue travelling together wherever I go.

Because some travel habits are simply too easy and too practical to leave behind.

Why You Should Never Assume Tap Water Is Free in Europe

Many Canadian and American travellers are surprised the first time they sit down in a European restaurant, ask for water, and are presented with a €7 bottle of mineral water instead of a complimentary glass from the tap.

Now, a court case in Italy has pushed the issue into international headlines.

Italy’s highest court recently ruled that a luxury hotel in the Dolomites acted lawfully when it refused to provide tap water to a guest dining in its restaurant. The traveller argued that water is a universal human right and should be included as part of normal hospitality. The court disagreed, confirming that Italian restaurants and hotels are under no legal obligation to provide tap water to guests.

For North American travellers, this often feels shocking.

In Canada and much of the United States, free tap water in restaurants is essentially expected. In many parts of Europe, however, bottled water is deeply embedded in dining culture, and complimentary tap water is far from universal.

Europe Is Not One Uniform Experience

One of the biggest mistakes travellers make is assuming “Europe” operates under one set of customs.

It doesn’t.

Some countries legally require restaurants to provide tap water free of charge. Others allow restaurants to refuse completely. In some destinations, free water is culturally normal even without a law. In others, asking for tap water may be viewed as unusual or even impolite.

One lesson I have learned and also observed, is if you just ask for “water” you will more than likely be served a bottle of water with a charge on your bill.

If you want “tap water” then you must ask for that specifically, and then you will quickly find out if the restaurant is going to serve you tap water. Bear in mind however, there could still be a charge for serving tap water.

Countries Where You May Be Charged or Refused

Travellers are more likely to encounter paid bottled water culture in:

Italy
Germany
Netherlands
Czech Republic and Poland
Bulgaria and parts of Eastern Europe

Bottled water culture remains strong in some countries due to local perceptions around tap water quality.

Why Europeans Often Buy Bottled Water

This issue is not only about profit.

In many European countries:

• Mineral water culture is generations old
• Sparkling water is more common than still water
• Diners often view bottled water as part of the restaurant experience
• Local tap water may contain high mineral content or strong taste variations
• Restaurants rely heavily on beverage sales for profit margins

In Italy particularly, ordering bottled still or sparkling water is considered completely normal dining etiquette.

The Environmental Shift Happening Across Europe

At the same time, Europe is slowly changing.

The European Union has introduced broader drinking water initiatives aimed at reducing plastic bottle consumption and encouraging access to tap water. However, current EU rules largely encourage restaurants to provide water rather than mandate it universally.

There are also discussions within the EU about future regulations that could require restaurants to offer tap water either free or at minimal cost.

So while travellers may still encounter resistance today, attitudes are gradually evolving.

Practical Advice for Travellers

If you are travelling in Europe, especially on a cruise extension or land tour, here are a few practical tips:

• Never assume water is complimentary
• Ask specifically for “tap water” if that is what you want
• Expect bottled water charges in many restaurants

Personally, I am a traveller that rarely drinks tap water anywhere outside of my home. Why? Because water is that unknown source of potential gastrointestional upset that you just don't want when you are travelling.

The Bigger Lesson for Travellers

This story is really about something larger than water.

Travel reminds us that customs we consider “normal” at home are not universal.

I have said this before, and will say it again and again, that if you want things the way they are at home, then you should not be travelling…. For me, the differences that I encounter when travelling from home customs are one of the allures of travel.

Something as simple as ordering water can become a lesson in culture, hospitality, sustainability, economics, and social expectations.

And honestly, that is part of what makes travel so fascinating.

Everything about the journey is more complicated.

Why I Never Recommend Flying To Your Cruise On Embarkation Day

Could you get away with it? Absolutely.

Many travellers do.

But after years of travelling myself, booking cruises for clients, and watching airline disruptions become more common, I can honestly say that flying in at least one day early is one of the smartest travel decisions you can make.

Ironically, I have personally never missed a cruise. In fact, I almost always arrive at least one day before embarkation. But recently, even with that buffer built in, I experienced several horrendous flight delays and tight connections that reminded me just how vulnerable travellers really are when relying on same-day flights.

These delays were with border control in Frankfurt Airport. Lines were 2+ hours long and with my connection only 90-minutes, I can say that we were sweating it a bit. With some persuasive pleading, we were moved up in line - in fact there were about 20 of us on the same connection. We made it to the gate - running - with only minutes to spare.

Had those experiences happened on embarkation day itself, there is a very real possibility I could have missed the ship.

And unlike a hotel reservation, a cruise ship does not wait for late passengers.

Cruise Ships Operate On Tight Schedules

Modern cruise itineraries are tightly coordinated operations involving:

• Port authorities
• Fuel scheduling
• Crew logistics
• Immigration clearance
• Shore excursion timing
• Arrival slots at future ports

If a ship is scheduled to depart at 5:00 PM, it is often required that all passengers be onboard much earlier, sometimes by 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM.

Even if your flight only arrives “a little late,” that delay can quickly snowball into a disaster.

A delayed departure from your home airport could cause:

• A missed connection wherever you are connecting
• A baggage delay
• A two-hour passport control line
• Traffic congestion getting to the port - and this I have experienced for real!
• A missed embarkation cutoff

At that point, the cruise line may deny boarding.

And now you are trying to catch up to a ship that may already be sailing toward another country.

Airline Delays Are More Common Than Many Travellers Realize

Since the pandemic, airline operations have become far less predictable.

I regularly see issues involving:

• Aircraft swaps
• Crew shortages
• Weather disruptions
• Mechanical delays
• Missed connections
• Airport staffing issues
• Air traffic congestion
• Delayed baggage handling

Even if your first flight leaves on time, your connecting flight may not.

I recently experienced connection issues myself despite travelling a day early. Sitting in airports watching departure boards change repeatedly is stressful enough when you know your cruise is tomorrow.

I cannot imagine that same stress knowing the ship departs in only a few hours.

International Cruises Add Even More Risk

Flying same-day for a Caribbean cruise from Florida is risky enough, but international cruises create even more variables.

For example:

• European river cruises
• Mediterranean cruises
• Alaska cruises requiring connections
• Expedition cruises
• Cruises departing from Asia, Australia, or South America

These itineraries often involve:

• Long-haul flights
• Multiple flight segments
• Immigration processing
• Customs delays
• Different airlines on separate tickets
• Overnight airport disruptions

One missed connection can collapse the entire itinerary.

And if your cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience like Antarctica, the Galápagos, or the Northwest Passage, the financial consequences can be enormous.

Weather Can Destroy The Best Planned Itinerary

Many travellers underestimate how weather in one city can affect flights across an entire continent.

You may be flying from sunny Toronto to sunny Fort Lauderdale, but thunderstorms in Atlanta or Chicago can still disrupt your aircraft routing.

One of the biggest benefits of arriving early is something many travellers overlook:

Personally, I love arriving early because it allows the cruise itself to feel like the beginning of the vacation, not the recovery period from travel chaos.

My Personal Recommendation As A Travel Advisor

If at all possible, I strongly recommend arriving:

• At least one day early for most cruises
• Two days early for international or complex itineraries
• Even earlier during winter or hurricane season

This is especially important for:

• Cruises departing from Europe or overseas

When clients ask me if same-day flights are “safe,” my answer is usually: “They are safe until something goes wrong.”

15 Things Travellers Forget Before International Flights

International travel can be exciting, but even experienced travellers sometimes forget important details before heading to the airport. Unfortunately, small mistakes before an international flight can quickly turn into expensive problems, unnecessary stress, missed flights, or ruined vacations.

As a travel advisor, I often see travellers focus heavily on the destination while overlooking critical parts of the actual travel process. The reality is that international travel preparation starts long before boarding the aircraft. I add some personal experience with most of the points below.

Here are 15 things travellers commonly forget before international flights — and why they matter more than most people realize.

1. Checking Passport Expiry Dates

Many countries require your passport to remain valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Some travellers only discover this requirement at airport check-in.

Always verify passport validity several months before international travel.

TOWK Tip: Put a calendar reminder on your smart phone for 6-months before your passport expires to start the renewal process.

2. Understanding Visa and Entry Requirements

Entry rules continue to evolve around the world. Some countries require visas, electronic authorizations, proof of onward travel, or health documentation.

Canadian travellers should always verify official government entry requirements before departure.

TOWK Tip: Find the actual legitimate Government site of the country you are travelling to to research your Visa and entry requirements. A great first step for Canadians is this site: https://travel.gc.ca/

3. Informing Their Credit Card Company

Unexpected international charges can trigger fraud alerts and temporarily lock your cards. Advising your bank of travel plans may help avoid disruptions while abroad.

It is also wise to travel with more than one credit card.

TOWK Tip: My personal Credit Card company does not require travel notifications, but many still take them.

4. Purchasing Travel Insurance

Many travellers assume nothing will go wrong until flights are delayed, luggage disappears, or medical emergencies happen overseas.

Travel insurance can help protect travellers from unexpected medical costs, trip interruptions, cancellations, and baggage issues during international travel.

TOWK Tip: Don't leave home without insurance. We don't know what will happen that will create a need for insurance.

5. Downloading Airline Apps

Airline apps often provide real-time gate changes, delays, boarding notifications, and baggage tracking.

During irregular operations, app users sometimes receive rebooking options before airport lines even begin moving.

TOWK Tip: These Apps keep you in the know, but you must have a data package, or be connected to the airline or airport Wi-Fi.

6. Charging Devices Before Departure

Airport charging stations are not always available, and aircraft power outlets do occasionally fail.

Experienced travellers often board long-haul flights with fully charged phones, tablets, headphones, and portable battery packs.

TOWK Tip: Be aware that battery packs / battery backups are under more and more scrutiny all the time. Be aware of the current regulations and these can change by airline. Some airlines are not allowing their use during flight.

7. Bringing Essential Medications In Carry-On Bags

Medications should never be packed in checked luggage. Lost bags and delays happen more often than travellers expect.

Important medications, prescriptions, and basic medical supplies should always stay with you onboard.

TOWK Tip: Medications should just always be with you.

8. Checking International Roaming Plans

International roaming charges can become shockingly expensive without proper planning.

Travellers should understand their mobile provider’s travel plans, eSIM options, cruise ship roaming charges, and Wi-Fi limitations before departure.

TOWK Tip: Not widely known, but many Canadian providers now offer “packages” for roaming that are cheaper than the daily rate.

9. Packing A Change Of Clothes In Carry-On Luggage

Delayed luggage can turn the first day of a trip into a stressful experience.

A lightweight change of clothes, toiletries, chargers, and essential items in your carry-on can make a major difference if checked bags are delayed.

TOWK Tip: Our last time luggage was delayed was in Egypt before our Nile River Cruise. Those lightweight changes in the carry-on saved us for the 3-days waiting for our luggage to catch up to us.

10. Wearing Comfortable Clothing For Long Flights

Tight clothing and poor footwear can make long-haul flights far more uncomfortable than necessary.

Experienced travellers usually prioritize layers, breathable fabrics, and comfort over airport fashion.

TOWK Tip: We bought “Spa Slippers” on Amazon. These are basically disposable slippers. On a long-haul flight these make your feet so much more comfortable, and it keeps your feet from one of the dirtiest parts of the aircraft - the floor.

11. Bringing A Refillable Water Bottle

Aircraft cabins are extremely dry, and dehydration contributes heavily to travel fatigue and jet lag.

An empty refillable bottle can easily be filled after airport security.

TOWK Tip: This is the way to go for sure.

12. Checking Airport Connection Times

Not all flight connections are equal. Some international airports require lengthy terminal transfers, passport control, security re-screening, or train connections between gates.

Short connections may look fine on paper but can become risky in reality.

TOWK Tip: ALERT! With EES and ETIAS coming into place in Europe and the Schengen Region, connection times are key. Be very aware that some airports will almost promise to have you miss your connection. My suggestion now until EES and ETIAS are settled is a minimum 3 hours connection time in Europe and the Schengen Region.

13. Downloading Maps And Travel Documents Offline

Airport Wi-Fi and mobile coverage are not always reliable after arrival.

Experienced international travellers often download maps, hotel information, boarding passes, and key documents before leaving home.

TOWK Tip: Don't rely on having Wi-Fi or a great data connection. I download everything that I think I might need on my phone so that as long as I have battery, I can get to the information I need.

14. Checking Weather At Their Destination

Many travellers only check temperatures and forget about humidity, rain seasons, wind, or altitude conditions.

Weather can dramatically affect packing decisions, excursions, and overall comfort during a trip.

TOWK Tip: The real fact is that now - IMO - weather does not follow historical patterns. I have learned to pack light that covers hot, cold, and everything inbetween.

15. Arriving At The Airport Early Enough

International travel typically requires more time than domestic flights due to passport checks, baggage processing, customs procedures, and security screening.

Arriving early reduces stress and provides a buffer when airports become unexpectedly busy.

TOWK Tip: We hear horror stories of lines and delays with Security, and although most of the time I feel many of these reels are clickbait, it does and can happen. Don't cut your time short. On a departure day, I feel that I can wait at home, or be safe and wait at the airport. We also invest in a credit card that gives us lounge access and this is a much easier wait than at the boarding gate.

Final Thoughts

International travel is one of life’s great experiences, but preparation matters. Many common travel problems begin before travellers even board the aircraft.

A few simple steps before departure can dramatically reduce stress, improve comfort, and help travellers enjoy their vacation from the very beginning instead of starting the journey frustrated and exhausted.

Experienced travellers understand that successful international travel is often less about luck and more about preparation.

In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see travellers make is waiting for a “better deal” on a luxury cruise, only to discover months later that the price has increased dramatically, the best cabins are gone, and many of the valuable promotions have disappeared.

After years of watching pricing trends across cruise lines like Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Explora Journeys, I can confidently say this:

Luxury cruises rarely become cheaper closer to sailing.

In many cases, they become significantly more expensive.

Luxury Cruise Pricing Is Based On Inventory, Not Empty Cabins

Luxury cruise lines operate very differently from mass-market cruise lines.

Most luxury ships are smaller and carry far fewer guests. A river cruise ship may carry only 150 passengers. An expedition ship may carry fewer than 200. Even many luxury ocean ships carry dramatically fewer guests than the mega-ships operated by larger mainstream brands.

That means inventory is limited from day one.

Unlike airlines trying to fill hundreds of remaining seats at the last minute, luxury cruise lines often sell a large portion of their inventory many months — and sometimes years — in advance.

When the best cabins begin disappearing, prices usually rise, not fall.

The cruise lines know demand is strong, and they use sophisticated yield management systems that continuously adjust pricing based on:
• cabin availability
• booking pace
• sailing popularity
• destination demand
• seasonality
• suite category demand
• historical performance

The earlier you book, the more likely you are to secure:
• lower introductory pricing
• preferred cabin locations
• better airfare promotions
• included perks
• reduced deposits
• bonus shore excursions
• beverage packages or onboard credit offers

As availability shrinks, those promotions often disappear.

Real Examples I’ve Personally Seen

I often tell clients that booking early can save thousands of dollars, but this is not theory. I have watched it happen repeatedly.

One example involved a 15-day Australia and New Zealand voyage with Viking.

When the itinerary was first released, the pricing was approximately CAD $8,000 per person for the category booked.

Less than two years later, the exact same sailing, same ship, same cabin category, and same departure period had risen to approximately CAD $16,000 per person.

That is roughly a CAD $16,000 difference per cabin for two travellers.

Another example involved a British Isles itinerary where the exact same cabin category increased by more than CAD $15,000 per cabin between the original booking period and the later pricing cycle.

I have also seen similar increases with river cruises, especially for:
• Christmas Markets sailings
• Tulip season itineraries
• Mekong River cruises
• Bordeaux wine itineraries
• Popular expedition voyages
• Suites and higher-category cabins

Luxury inventory disappears faster than many travellers realize.

Why Cruise Lines Do Not Want To Train Travellers To Wait

Luxury cruise lines are carefully managed businesses.

They do not want to encourage travellers to delay booking until the final months before departure.

If cruise lines regularly slashed prices near sailing, experienced travellers would simply wait.

That creates operational problems for the cruise lines:
• unpredictable revenue forecasting
• staffing uncertainty
• excursion planning complications
• airfare coordination issues
• inventory instability

Instead, luxury lines reward travellers who commit early.

That is why launch pricing can sometimes represent the best overall value a traveller will ever see for a particular sailing.

The Best Cabins Usually Sell First

Another misconception is that all cabins are equal.

They are not.

On many ships, certain cabins are considered highly desirable because of:
• larger balconies
• mid-ship location
• proximity to elevators
• better views
• reduced motion
• larger bathrooms
• upgraded suite benefits
• connecting options for families

Those cabins often disappear very early.

By waiting, travellers may still find “a cabin,” but not necessarily the cabin they truly wanted.

This becomes especially important on:
• river cruises
• expedition cruises
• small luxury ships
• world cruises
• holiday sailings
• unique itineraries with limited departures

Last-Minute Deals Still Exist — But Usually Not Where People Think

Yes, there are occasionally last-minute cruise deals.

But they are far more common in:
• mass-market cruising
• off-season departures
• undesirable cabin categories
• repositioning cruises
• sailings with weak demand

They are far less common on highly sought-after luxury itineraries.

And even when lower fares appear late in the booking cycle, travellers may still face:
• expensive airfare
• poor flight schedules
• limited hotel availability
• fewer excursion choices
• reduced cabin selection

The “savings” are not always true savings.

Why Working With A Cruise Advisor Matters

One of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced cruise advisor is understanding booking timing.

Sometimes booking immediately makes sense.

Sometimes waiting for a new promotion makes sense.

Sometimes holding a cabin before airfare opens is the smartest strategy.

An experienced advisor can help travellers:
• monitor pricing
• understand promotions
• compare inclusions
• select the right cabin
• evaluate cancellation terms
• coordinate flights and insurance
• avoid expensive mistakes

Most importantly, a good advisor helps travellers understand value, not just price.

Because in luxury travel, the cheapest option is not always the best value.

And waiting for a “sale” may end up costing far more than booking early.

One of the most common questions I receive from clients planning their first river cruise is surprisingly simple:

“What cabin should I book?”

Unlike ocean cruises where balconies are common, river ships are narrower and space is more limited. This means the type of cabin you choose can significantly shape your experience onboard.

Having sailed on multiple river cruise lines myself, I’ve noticed that the cabin terminology can be confusing. A French Balcony on one line may be very different from a Veranda on another. Some ships also have lower-deck cabins referred to Fixed Window Cabins, which come with their own pros and cons.

Let’s walk through the major cabin types and how they compare across three of the most popular premium river cruise lines: Viking, AmaWaterways, and Uniworld.

Understanding the Main River Cruise Cabin Types

Most river ships offer four broad categories of accommodations:

Lower-deck river view cabins
French Balcony cabins
Veranda or step-out balcony cabins
Suites

Each category offers a different combination of space, views, and price.

Fixed Window Cabins - The Lead-In River View Option

These cabins are typically located on the lowest passenger deck, close to the waterline. Because of their position, the windows are usually smaller and may sit partially at water level.

They are known by different names depending on the cruise line, and I more often stay in one of these myself. More on this later.

Viking

Viking calls these Standard Staterooms, generally located on the lower deck of their Longships. They feature a fixed river-view window rather than a balcony door.

Uniworld

Uniworld typically calls these Classic staterooms, which also feature fixed windows rather than balconies.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways often labels these as Window Staterooms on the lowest deck.

When these cabins make sense

They are often the most affordable way to experience river cruising. Since guests spend most of their time exploring destinations rather than sitting in the room, many experienced travellers happily choose them.

I am going to add a paragraph or two at the end to explain why I book these cabins and river cruising facts in general that may influence your cabin choice.

However, you should know a few things:

Windows are smaller and closer to the waterline
Passing lock walls can be close to the window
Views may occasionally be blocked when ships dock side-by-side

For travellers who care more about the itinerary than the room itself, they can represent excellent value.

French Balcony Cabins

The Most Common River Cruise Cabin

A French balcony is not a step-out balcony.

Instead, it is a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door with a railing, allowing fresh air and unobstructed views, but no outdoor seating area.

These cabins are extremely popular because they bring the outside scenery directly into the room.

Viking

Viking French Balcony staterooms are typically around 135 sq ft, featuring sliding glass doors that open to a railing.

They are found on the upper decks of Viking Longships and offer a bright interior with direct views of the river.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways offers French Balcony cabins on some ships, that can be from 155-170 sq ft depending on the ship. Many of their newer vessels replaced them with their signature Twin Balcony design, which I’ll explain next.

Uniworld

Uniworld ships frequently feature French Balcony staterooms around 18 m² (about 194 sq ft) depending on the vessel.

These rooms often feature luxury touches such as handcrafted beds, marble bathrooms, and premium bath amenities.

Why travellers like French balconies

They offer:

Natural light
Fresh air
Great views while cruising scenic stretches of river

For many travellers, this is the sweet spot of value and experience.

Veranda or Step-Out Balcony Cabins

A Veranda cabin includes a true outdoor balcony with space to sit, typically with chairs and a small table.

These are less common on river ships simply because of space limitations.

Viking

Viking offers Veranda Staterooms of roughly 205 sq ft, including a private step-out balcony.

These cabins are larger than French Balcony rooms and include seating areas inside the cabin.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways has arguably one of the most distinctive designs in river cruising.

Their ships introduced the concept of Twin Balconies, which combine:

• A French balcony inside
• A step-out veranda outside

This design allows guests to enjoy the view in any weather.

Twin Balcony staterooms typically range from 210–235 sq ft depending on category. (

Uniworld

Some Uniworld ships offer Deluxe Balcony rooms with enclosed balconies or floor-to-ceiling windows that create a balcony-style space within the cabin.

The emphasis on Uniworld ships tends to be more on luxury interiors and larger room sizes rather than large outdoor balconies.

Suites

Space, Separation, and Additional Services

Suites are the most spacious accommodations on river ships and often include:

• Separate living areas
• Larger bathrooms
• Enhanced service levels

Viking Suites

Viking Longships feature Veranda Suites and Explorer Suites.

These often include:

Separate living room and bedroom
A veranda plus a French balcony
Significantly larger living space.

AmaWaterways Suites

AmaWaterways suites typically feature the Twin Balcony design, offering both balcony types plus additional interior space.

Uniworld Suites

Uniworld suites lean heavily into the luxury boutique hotel experience, with features like:

• marble bathrooms
• expanded living areas
• butler service for suite guests.

These suites can reach over 400 sq ft on some ships.

Key Differences Between the Three Cruise Lines

Although the cabin categories appear similar, each cruise line approaches design differently.

Viking

Scandinavian design
Clear, simple cabin categories
True veranda cabins available
Suites include both veranda and French balcony

AmaWaterways

Known for the Twin Balcony innovation
Very popular with travellers who want outdoor seating plus panoramic views
Multiple cabin layouts across most ships

Uniworld

Strong focus on luxury interiors and boutique design
Fewer traditional step-out balconies
Larger rooms and high-end finishes

My Advice When Choosing a River Cruise Cabin

Having experienced these ships personally, here are a few practical thoughts I share with clients.

If your budget allows it, I usually recommend at least a French Balcony especially for your first river cruise. This category ususally sits in the middle of the price point, and you may find on a subsequent river cruise that you would like an actual outside balcony, or that a Fixed Window Class cabin would do.

River cruising is incredibly scenic, and the ability to open the doors and watch the world drift past your cabin adds something special. However, we personally do not sit in our cabin to watch the world go by. If there is something to see, we are either in the lounge which has floor-to-ceiling windows, or we are on the sundeck. We use our cabin pretty much just to sleep and get ready for the day.

Additionally, on a river cruise you are often out all day exploring, and most – not all but most – river cruises sail after dark and there is nothing to see.

Another consideration of your time in port, is that many times your river cruise longship may be “rafted” in port next to another ship. This means that you could shake hands with the person on the next ship. In these port scenarios you have no view.

If you enjoy sitting outdoors with coffee or wine, then a Veranda or Twin Balcony cabin may be worth the upgrade.

And if you love space, privacy, and added service, suites can feel like a small luxury apartment on the river.

The good news is that river ships are small, intimate, and beautifully designed. No matter which cabin category you choose, you are never far from the view. For us however, we are always in the lounge or on the sundeck when there is something to see.

12 Ways Travellers Make Long-Haul Flights More Miserable Than They Need To Be

Long-haul flights can be exhausting, but after personally experiencing many flights up to 16-hours in length, and then additional connections that make the travel over 30-hours in total, I have seen many travellers unintentionally make the experience harder on themselves than it needs to be. These are my observations, and I hope that they will help you if you are facing a 12+ hour flight.

Don’t walk around barefoot on the aircraft
Aircraft floors, especially around lavatories, are not as clean as many travellers assume. Wearing socks or footwear helps with hygiene and comfort. We take disposable slippers that we buy in bulk on Amazon. These are cheap, and they really do allow your feet to breathe and are much more comfortable than wearing clunky shoes for 16-hours.

Avoid carbonated drinks and gassy foods
Cabin pressure can increase bloating and discomfort. Fizzy drinks and certain foods may make long flights feel even more uncomfortable. I have stopped drinking soda/pop during flights and only water that comes out of a commercially sold bottle, or my own water bottle.

Stay hydrated during the flight
Cabin air is extremely dry. Drinking water regularly can help reduce fatigue, headaches, dry skin, and jet lag symptoms.

Charge devices before boarding
Passengers often rely heavily on in-seat power, but outlets do not always work. Arriving at the airport and at your destination with fully charged devices reduces stress. Charge your devices fully before boarding the aircraft - always - and carry a power-bank for emergencies. Be aware that more airlines and more countries now have very specific limits on power-banks and it could be confiscated at security. Additionally, note that most aircraft still only have USB connections for charging, so if your device has a different charging port/cable connection, you will need an adaptor cable that will allow you to connect your devices.

Dress in layers
Aircraft temperatures can fluctuate significantly during long-haul flights. Layers allow travellers to stay comfortable whether the cabin is hot or cold. On a recent flight I was “baking hot” and even though I asked the flight attendants if they could reduce the temperature, it was never comfortable. The flip side is being cold and that can be unbearable. Make sure you have a light coat in your carry-on and easy to reach.

Don’t rely solely on airline blankets or pillows
Bringing your own travel pillow, light blanket, or comfort items can make sleeping much easier. There are always questions about the cleanliness of airline blankets, and there are really cheap options on Amazon that you can wash at home and you can feel secure when you pull it up around your neck and face.

Get up and move periodically
Sitting for many hours without movement can lead to stiffness, swelling, and circulation issues. Short walks and stretching help. On long-haul flights I do calf exercises in between standing sessions and this plays a huge role in preventing potential blood clots in the legs.

Be mindful of alcohol consumption
Alcohol can increase dehydration and worsen jet lag. Moderate consumption is usually a better strategy on overnight flights. I do love a glass of red wine on a flight, and on most long-haul flights you can get several glasses. Keep it to a minimum and you will feel better on landing.

Choose comfortable clothing over fashion
Tight or restrictive clothing can become uncomfortable after many hours in a confined seat. I have over time collected a range of travel clothing including specific bottoms and tops for flights. I have many times seen folks in jeans for a long-haul flight and I personally feel that this would be - for me - the most uncomfortable and unforgiving fabric for flying.

Plan sleep strategically
Trying to align sleep with the destination time zone may help reduce jet lag and improve arrival energy levels. I am one that does not sleep well on an aircraft unless I am in Business Class on a lay-flat bed, and so I just align my thinking knowing that I am not going to sleep well. On any flight, when I arrive at destination, I try to push myself to stay awake until my regular sleeping time and that helps me to put my internal clock on the right path.

Pack essential items in your carry-on
Medications, chargers, toiletries, and a change of clothes should always remain accessible in case of delays or lost luggage. Further to that, we have all seen people rummaging through their carry-on looking for this cable, or earphones, etc. Have a small pouch of items that you will want at your seat ready to pull out of your backpack or carry-on so that you don't need to rummage around looking for this or that.

Prepare mentally for the flight experience
Patience, realistic expectations, and planning ahead can significantly improve the overall travel experience. Once I arrive at the airport to begin the travel experience, I give myself and my expectations over to chance. We cannot control what happens during our journey, but we can control how we react and/or deal with situations. Hopefully all goes to plan, but sometimes “stuff” happens and we have no choice but to deal with it.

BONUS - TIP #13
I never arrive for a flight of any length without movie/TV show content on my phone to watch. Why? Aircraft seat back entertainment does not always work. Recently on a flight home from Norway to Canada, a whole section of the Economy cabin had no access to the seat back entertainment and the flight crew could not fix it. For me, I also travel so much and the content on flights is pretty similar across airlines. I have most often watched what I am interested in, so bringing content that I have downloaded from my home streaming services is the best way to go for me. I often only use the seat back entertainment system for the flight map.

My Summary

Long-haul flights are rarely glamorous, even in premium cabins. However, many common in-flight frustrations are preventable with a little preparation. Simple habits such as staying hydrated, dressing comfortably, moving regularly, and planning ahead can make a major difference in how travellers feel both during the flight and upon arrival.

For frequent travellers, these small adjustments often separate an exhausting journey from a far more comfortable and manageable experience.

Mobility Challenges and Cruise Travel

Travel is one of life’s great joys. It opens doors to culture, history, cuisine, and experiences that stay with us forever. For many travellers with mobility challenges, cruising has become one of the most appealing ways to see the world. Ships provide accommodation, dining, and transportation in one place, often making travel easier than traditional land-based trips.

But there is an important reality that travellers should understand before embarking on a cruise to Europe, Asia, or other historic destinations around the world.

Accessibility standards outside North America can be very different from what we are used to at home.

The World Is Not Equally Accessible Everywhere

In North America, accessibility standards have improved dramatically over the past several decades. Ramps, elevators, accessible washrooms, curb cuts, and wide doorways are common in public buildings. Travellers who rely on wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, or canes often expect similar conditions everywhere.

However, many destinations around the world were built centuries before accessibility standards existed and there are no laws forcing these accessibility standards.

European cities are filled with medieval streets, narrow walkways, ancient staircases, and historic buildings protected by preservation laws. Many sidewalks are uneven, cobblestone streets are common, and older buildings may have steps but no ramps. Handrails may be missing, and elevators are often rare in historic districts, and some are so small, they only allow for one or two people standing, and may not accommodate a larger wheelchair. In parts of Asia and other regions, travellers may also encounter squat toilets, steep stairways, or public spaces not designed for wheelchair access.

These places are not intentionally excluding travellers with disabilities. In many cases they simply reflect the preservation of history.

I once heard a traveller ask a guide in a European city why the cobblestone streets were not paved over to make walking easier. The guide paused for a moment and replied thoughtfully: these streets have been here for more than one thousand years. They are part of our history. We would never pave over them.

That moment captured the tension between accessibility and preservation that exists in many parts of the world.

We arrive in destinations with expectations that conditions will be like home. Often they are not, and it is just a part of travel that we must accept.

Cruises Can Be Accessible, But Ports Are Different

Cruise ships themselves have made significant progress in accessibility. Most modern ships offer accessible staterooms, elevators, wide corridors, and accessible public spaces. Mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters are commonly used on board, and cruise lines generally accommodate them with planning.

Many travellers with limited mobility actually find cruises to be one of the easiest ways to travel. In surveys of cruise passengers with mobility limitations, a large majority report satisfaction with the assistance provided on board ships.

My personal observations with smaller ships and river cruises especially, is that ship gangways are not always ramps. Sometimes they are stepped and not accessible to a wheelchair. Often river longships “raft” in port and that could mean moving through one or two other ships to get to your ship. This is not a flat and clear path off or on your ship, rather a series of steps and short connecting gangways. These are not wheelchair friendly. I have also personally witnessed that ship Crew do not actively engage to help with this kind of embarkation and disembarkation, and that the individual that needs assistance must have family or friends with them to assist. This can be a liability and health and safety thing for ship's crew.

However, the biggest challenges usually arise once the ship reaches port.

Historic towns often have uneven surfaces and steep streets. Shops, cafés, and small restaurants may have steps at the entrance. Museums and historic sites may involve stairs or narrow passageways. Even when transportation is available, many shore excursion coaches are not equipped with wheelchair lifts.

In some ports, passengers must also use small tender boats to reach shore. Motorized wheelchairs and scooters often cannot be taken on these tenders unless special roll-on capability exists, which is not guaranteed, and actually rare.

Mobility Devices and Cruise Line Policies

Most cruise lines allow guests to bring manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, or mobility scooters on board. However, there are limitations that travellers should understand in advance. NOTE that many cruise lines require you to disclose the size and type of wheelchair or scooter in advance when booking, and some cruise lines do not allow or have limited bookings available for guests using wheelchairs.

Accessible staterooms are limited in number and must often be reserved early. Certain scooters or wheelchairs that exceed size limits may require accessible cabins or may not fit through standard cabin doors. In some cases, oversized devices could even prevent boarding if they cannot safely be accommodated. Most cruise lines do not allow the scooter or wheelchair to be left in the corridor, so they must be kept in the small cabin often taking up much of the free space.

River cruises can present additional challenges. Because river ships are smaller and docking conditions change frequently, some European river cruise operators restrict or discourage large mobility scooters entirely. Additionally, if the river cruise line does allow a manual wheelchair, or you rely on a cane or a walker, you must be aware that often the elevators on a river ship do not go to the lowest deck – where there are cabins – or to the sundeck on the top of the ship. If you are not capable of climbing stairs, then you will not have access to these decks.

These policies are not intended to exclude travellers. They exist because of physical limitations of ships, safety requirements, and emergency evacuation procedures.

The Importance of Planning Ahead

For travellers with mobility limitations, the most important step is planning ahead.

This is where speaking with an experienced Travel Advisor can make a significant difference. A knowledgeable advisor can help identify:

cruise ships with accessible cabins
itineraries with fewer tender ports
shore excursions designed for limited mobility
destinations that are easier to navigate
equipment rental options such as scooters delivered directly to the ship

Unfortunately, much of this information is not always obvious when travellers book trips online. Details about accessibility are often provided later in the booking process, when changing plans becomes more difficult.

Having these conversations early allows travellers to choose the right cruise, the right ship, and the right destinations for their specific mobility needs.

Travel Should Still Be Possible

Mobility challenges should never mean that travel dreams must end.

Cruising continues to evolve and accessibility is improving across the travel industry. Ships are being designed with better access, ports are gradually improving infrastructure, and tour operators are developing excursions specifically designed for travellers with limited mobility. It may be that you have to consider newer ships as older ships may be more difficult to accommodate a scooter or motorized wheelchair.

Recently I watched a couple that were both reliant on scooters to move about the ship have a very difficult time rolling on and off the elevators as the elevator lobbies were too narrow to give a decent turning radius. It was actually quite disheartening to watch, but even a bystander could not help because there just was not enough space. This ship was launched over 20 years ago, and just not designed with mobility restrictions in mind.

The reality remains that the world does not yet offer the same level of accessibility everywhere.

Understanding that reality ahead of time helps travellers avoid frustration and instead focus on destinations and experiences that truly work for them.

The goal is not to limit travel. The goal is to make travel possible.

With the right planning, the right expectations, and the right guidance, travellers with mobility challenges can still explore the world in meaningful and rewarding ways.

And sometimes the best journeys are the ones thoughtfully designed to match each traveller’s needs.

People often ask why someone would choose to travel to a place as remote as the Arctic?

The truth is that the Arctic has a way of changing the way travellers see the world.

Part of that comes from the landscape itself. The Arctic is vast in a way that is difficult to describe until you experience it. The horizon seems endless, the air is incredibly clear, and the quiet can be almost surreal. In many places there are no roads, no buildings, and no visible signs of modern life.

Then there is the wildlife. Seeing a polar bear moving across sea ice or watching whales surface in cold Arctic waters creates a connection to nature that is very different from seeing wildlife in more developed environments.

Another powerful aspect of Arctic travel comes from visiting the communities that live there. Inuit culture has adapted to this environment for thousands of years, and learning about their traditions and perspectives offers travellers a deeper understanding of life in one of the most challenging climates on Earth. Are Shore Excursions Included on Viking Cruises?

One Shore Excursion Is Included in Every Port

On both Viking Ocean and Viking River cruises, one shore excursion in each port is typically included in the cruise fare.

These excursions are designed to introduce travellers to the highlights of each destination and usually include guided tours, transportation, and cultural experiences. I have heard many people say that these are probably only a city tour on a coach, but I have done most all of the destination included excursions and we have always been pleased, and some are quite extensive.

For example, a river cruise along the Danube might include a guided walking tour through historic city centers, while an ocean cruise in the Mediterranean may include visits to landmarks and historic sites.

Regardless of what you may hear or read, in my opinion, there is great value in the Viking included excursions.

Optional Excursions for Deeper Experiences

In addition to the included excursion, Viking offers optional excursions that can be purchased for travellers who want more in-depth or specialized experiences.

These might include:

• smaller group cultural tours
• culinary experiences
• active excursions such as biking or hiking
• extended historical tours

From my experience sailing Viking, the included excursions are generally well organized and provide a solid introduction to the destination. We always prefer these to walking around a city ourselves for the first time, because we have a guide to inform us what we are looking at. When you wander on your own, you don’t always have or gain the same knowledge of the destination.

When Excursions Become Available

Excursions are typically booked through the MyVikingJourney portal before the cruise.

Viking gives earlier access and booking priority of shore excursions to guests in higher stateroom categories. If you are in a lower category of cabin, you may be last on the list to book.

Now, this seems unfair, but as with many cruise lines, if you pay more, you receive more perks or amenities. We have never booked above the bottom two cabin categories of a Viking River or Ocean ship and we have never not ended up with the excursions we wanted. It is true that there is the occasional excursion that is strictly capacity controlled that may not be available at the time your booking window opens, but there are ways to address this.

I often advise clients to review excursions early because popular tours can fill quickly.

But fear not, here is a many time Viking repeat guest hack. If you cannot secure the shore excursion you want prior to boarding, make one of the first things you do be to visit Guest Services and ask about availability of the specific shore excursion you want. Often other guests will cancel and open spots. If this does not work you will meet the Shore Excursion Manager daily in the “Port Talk” and you will find that if you speak with this person they will do their utmost best to get you on that excursion. Yes, it is a bit of persistence, but it more often than not works.

Smartphones and Pickpockets: Your Phone Is Now the Top Target

A modern phone is effectively a traveller’s wallet, boarding pass holder, camera, map, translator, and travel planner all in one device. It may contain digital credit cards, airline tickets, cruise documents, hotel reservations, banking apps, and access to personal email accounts. Losing a phone is no longer just about the cost of replacing the device. It can disrupt an entire trip.

This is one thing you don’t want to lose, but if you do, it will happen quickly and you may not even notice immediately.

Because of this, phones have become the primary target for pickpockets and street thieves in many major travel destinations.

Police in London report tens of thousands of mobile phones stolen each year, with estimates commonly ranging between seventy and eighty thousand devices annually. That averages well over two hundred phones stolen every day. Across Europe, insurance industry data suggests roughly forty percent of reported mobile phone thefts occur in the United Kingdom, particularly in London’s crowded transit systems and tourist districts.

I am not picking on London, as there are other cities frequently associated with pickpocket activity including Paris, Barcelona, Rome, and parts of southern Europe where dense crowds gather around famous attractions, metro stations, and busy shopping streets. The pattern is similar in many large cities around the world. Anywhere travellers cluster together with phones in their hands becomes an attractive hunting ground for opportunistic thieves.

Staying Connected While Travellingis something more and more people are focused on. Our smartphones are our connection to the world in so many ways.

In recent years the method has also evolved. Traditional pickpocketing still occurs in crowds, but many thefts now involve quick “snatch and run” tactics. Thieves on bicycles, scooters, or even on foot may grab a phone directly from someone’s hand while they are texting or taking a photo.

For travellers, the phone has become one of the most valuable tools of the trip, so protecting it requires both digital security and simple situational awareness.

Recently as there have been events that have disrupted travel, your phone is a very important part if you are caught Travelling During Emergency Global Situations.

Before you travel, start with the basics of phone security.

Enable facial recognition or fingerprint authentication and use a strong passcode rather than a simple four-digit code. Turn on location tracking features such as Find My iPhone or Find My Device so the phone can be located or erased remotely if stolen. Make sure your photos and important data are backed up to the cloud so that losing the device does not mean losing your memories.

It is also wise to review the apps on your phone before leaving home. Remove apps you do not need for the trip and make sure payment apps require authentication before a purchase can be completed. Limiting what is accessible from your phone reduces the damage if it is stolen.

I am an Apple iPhone user through and through and I store nothing on my phone. Everything that I can access on my phone is accessed from my cloud storage. I use primarily Apple Pay, and that requires my facial recognition to activate. I have set up any critical App on my phone to require facial recognition to open.

Physical habits while travelling are just as important.

Keep your phone in a front pocket rather than a back pocket or open jacket pocket. Avoid placing it on café tables, restaurant counters, or bar tops where it can easily be picked up when you look away. In crowded areas such as transit stations, markets, festivals, or busy pedestrian streets, be especially aware of how visible your phone is.

Travellers should also be careful when using their phone for photos. One of the most common moments for theft is when someone holds a phone out while taking a picture of a landmark or filming a video. If you are photographing something popular, step slightly away from the crowd rather than standing in the middle of the pedestrian flow. Keep a firm grip on the phone and stay aware of anyone moving unusually close.

Some travellers also use simple accessories that add protection, such as a wrist strap or lanyard attached to the phone case. These small additions can prevent a thief from simply grabbing the phone and running.

There are also a few habits that help reduce risk across any type of travel.

Avoid walking while deeply focused on your phone, especially when navigating directions in unfamiliar areas. Step to the side of the street or sidewalk to check your map instead of stopping in the middle of a crowd.

Be cautious when someone bumps into you or creates a distraction. Pickpocketing often relies on distraction tactics that shift your attention away from your belongings.

Finally, back up your phone regularly while travelling. If you take photos throughout the day, upload them to the cloud when you return to your hotel at night. That way, even if the device disappears, the memories of the trip do not.

For cruise travellers, the risk is typically limited to time spent ashore in busy ports and cities. Cruise ships themselves are generally controlled environments with security and limited access, however we should never assume that there is not an opportunist on our cruise ship if we provide the opportunity. The same awareness that applies in any busy tourist area applies during shore excursions or independent exploration in port cities.

The good news is that most travellers will never experience phone theft during their trips. But as smartphones become more central to how we travel, they have also become more attractive targets for thieves. A few simple precautions can dramatically reduce the risk and help keep your trip running smoothly.

I have personally seen the tactics pickpockets use while travelling. Awareness and vigilance have allowed me to avoid their attempts. In my experience, protecting your smartphone and valuables is not complicated. Most of the time it simply comes down to situational awareness - knowing where you are, what is happening around you, and paying attention to how you carry your belongings.

Is Wi-Fi Free on Viking Cruises and How Good Is It?

How Viking Wi-Fi Works

Guests can access Wi-Fi using their personal devices anywhere on the ship.

This allows travelers to check email, send messages, and browse the internet during the voyage.

Speed and Reliability

Like all ships at sea, Viking relies on satellite internet. This means speeds can vary depending on location and weather conditions.

In my experience sailing Viking Ocean, the Wi-Fi was perfectly adequate for messaging, browsing, and checking travel details. You may also find it sufficient for checking and posting to Facebook and Instagram. You cannot count on streaming Netflix or other types of entertainment as this probably will not be supported.

When Wi-Fi Works Best

Wi-Fi speeds often improve when ships are near land or in port. As a Travel Advisor, I am often working even when I am travelling personally, and as an early riser, I find that the Wi-Fi speed is often at its best before everyone wakes each day and gets on their devices.

Many guests also use local mobile networks or eSIMs when visiting destinations during shore excursions, or when in port.

Part of the Viking Inclusive Experience

Complimentary Wi-Fi is one of the many features that make Viking cruises appealing to travellers who prefer a simpler, more inclusive experience.

There is “word in the wind” that Viking will continue to offer the existing Wi-Fi as an included amenity, however soon they may offer an upgraded experience for those who want need a higher bandwidth. This of course would be offered at a daily cost.

Why the Northwest Passage Is One of the Rarest Voyages You Can Take

In today’s world, it sometimes feels like every destination has already been discovered.

Popular cruise ports welcome thousands of visitors each day, and many well-known destinations appear on dozens of itineraries every season.

The Northwest Passage is completely different.

This legendary route through the Arctic can only be navigated during a short period each summer when sea ice retreats enough to allow ships to pass through the maze of islands that make up northern Canada. Even then, conditions can vary from year to year depending on ice and weather patterns.

Because of these challenges, only a small number of expedition ships attempt the crossing each season. Compared with traditional cruise itineraries, the number of travellers who experience the Northwest Passage each year is extremely small.

The route travels through some of the most remote waters on Earth, weaving between Arctic islands, quiet fjords, and drifting ice. Many of the places visited along the way have no cruise infrastructure at all. Landings often take place in remote locations that can only be reached by small expedition boats.

For travellers who feel that modern tourism has become too crowded, the Northwest Passage offers something truly different. It is one of the few places left where you can still feel a genuine sense of exploration.

Is the Viking Silver Spirits Beverage Package Worth It?

What the Silver Spirits Beverage Package Includes:

The Silver Spirits package allows guests to order cocktails, wines by the glass, and premium beverages throughout the day. Without this package, just a simple Coke will be charged to your account.

This includes most drinks in bars, lounges, and restaurants. There are some premium brands and wines that are not included, but very few.

When the Package Makes Sense

The package can be worthwhile for travellers who:

• enjoy cocktails or spirits regularly
• like wine outside meal times
• spend significant time in the ship’s lounges

When It May Not Be Necessary

Many Viking guests find they do not need the package because wine and beer are already included with lunch and dinner.

From my own experience sailing Viking Ocean and River, the included beverages during meals were often more than sufficient for most travellers, including ourselves. We sometimes buy it and sometimes do not. I don’t know if this will make sense to my readers, but when we travel alone as a couple, we often do NOT purchase the Viking Silver Spirits Package. When we travel with friends and family and we know that there will be quite a bit of socializing time before and after dinner we do in fact purchase the package.

Understanding the Viking Value

Viking’s approach is different from many cruise lines. Rather than requiring a beverage package to enjoy drinks with meals, Viking already includes beer and wine with your meals.

Now, I will comment that when it comes to pricing of the Silver Spirits Beverage Package, Viking’s pricing is very reasonable against other comparable cruise lines. Some competitive cruise lines in the same category can charge up to 3 times Viking.

Should You Travel With a Drone on a Cruise or in Europe?

Bringing a drone on a cruise or European vacation may sound like a great idea. Stunning aerial footage of historic cities, vineyards, coastlines, and cruise ships can seem irresistible when you are planning a trip. I once thought exactly the same thing before our Douro River cruise in Portugal. After going through the entire process and experiencing the realities firsthand, I can honestly say that travelling with a drone was far more effort than it was worth.

Before our trip, we spent months securing the required authorization from the Portuguese government and aviation authorities. We were issued an official signed document that we had to carry with us to prove our advance permission. Flying a drone legally in many European countries requires registration, permits, and sometimes insurance. In our case, we also needed written permission from the ship’s captain because cruise lines control what can be launched from the vessel. Even with all that preparation, the number of places where we were actually allowed to fly turned out to be extremely limited.

Many of the most beautiful places in Europe are protected cultural heritage sites. UNESCO locations often prohibit drone flights entirely. This includes historic districts, archaeological sites, and landmark viewpoints that travellers most want to capture from the air. The Douro Valley itself contains protected areas where drone use is restricted. Even when a drone is technically allowed, there may be additional rules about proximity to people, buildings, or transportation routes. Our drone was GPS controlled and even if we thought that we could fly in an area, the drone software recognized where it was not allowed to launch and would not launch.

Cities across Europe have strict drone laws that many travellers underestimate. In busy urban locations such as Lisbon, Rome, or Florence, regulations often restrict drone use when crowds are present. In some plazas there are limits on how many people can be in the square before drone flights are prohibited. While visiting Lisbon, we actually counted the number of people in a square and decided it was not legal to fly. Moments later another visitor launched a drone and within minutes police arrived and confiscated it.

There is also a social reality that many travellers do not think about until they experience it. Drones are noisy. In quiet countryside or historic towns, the sound of a drone carries surprisingly far. Even when you are technically allowed to fly, the humming noise can be very noticeable and often irritates people nearby who are trying to enjoy the scenery. We experienced this exactly. We were in a rural historic site with no city traffic or people noise. The sound of the drone was extremely evident and we overheard others making comments about how annoying that noise was. This is when we realized that our desire to have some aerial footage was actually impacting the experience of others.

Cruise travellers face additional complications. Many cruise lines allow drones to be carried onboard but restrict when or where they can be used. Flying from the ship itself is often prohibited for safety reasons. Even when permission is granted, there are technical challenges. Most consumer drones automatically return to the GPS point where they were launched. If the ship has moved during the flight, the drone may struggle to return to the vessel, or you may lose the drone in the water.

The result is that travellers often carry a drone for weeks and discover they rarely have an opportunity to use it legally or comfortably. Between permits, flight restrictions, cultural heritage protections, and local enforcement, the list of barriers grows quickly.

After returning home from that trip, we decided to sell our drone. Although we captured a few wonderful shots, we realized something important. There is an enormous amount of professional aerial footage available online. When creating travel videos or presentations, it is often easier and more practical to supplement your own footage with licensed aerial clips rather than carrying a drone around the world. We have many videos on our YouTube channel now that have licensed aerial footage that we obtained online. Were we there? Yes. Is every second of footage in our video from our cameras? No. However, we were there, and this aerial footage adds to the overall experience that we are sharing.

For most travellers, especially cruise passengers visiting historic cities, bringing a drone creates more complications than value. Between the regulations, the paperwork, the restrictions at UNESCO sites, and the potential for fines or confiscation, it is often far simpler to leave the drone at home and focus on enjoying the destination.

Wine and Beer with Meals

Across both Viking Ocean and Viking River ships, wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner.

This allows guests to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meals without needing a beverage package.

From my own experience sailing Viking Ocean, this works very well for most travellers because meals are relaxed and often last longer than typical cruise dining. We tend to linger in the dining room as there is no second seating that they are chasing you out to set up for.

Soft Drinks and Specialty Coffees

Coffee and tea are available throughout the day on Viking ships, with self-serve machines in venues such as the World Café and coffee is available in restaurants and lounges. River ships also provide espresso machines where guests can make specialty coffees such as cappuccinos or lattes.

Soft drinks and bottled water are typically included during meals, while additional beverages ordered outside mealtimes can be purchased individually or are included with the Silver Spirits Beverage Package.

This approach keeps the onboard experience simple and relaxed, allowing guests to enjoy many beverages without needing a package, while still offering optional upgrades for those who prefer a wider selection of drinks throughout the day.

Minibar in Staterooms

On Viking Ocean ships, all veranda staterooms include a minibar with soft drinks and snacks that are may be replenished daily and this depends on the cabin category you have reserved.

Some cabin categories include additional items such as wine and spirits.

The Silver Spirits Beverage Package

For travellers who prefer cocktails, drinks outside mealtimes, or premium wines, Viking offers the Silver Spirits beverage package.

Personal Perspective

Having sailed Viking River and Ocean on over 14 different itineraries now, I find that many travelers are perfectly satisfied with the included beverages. The atmosphere onboard tends to be relaxed rather than focused on nightlife or drinking simply to get the value out of the beverage package.

We have purchased the Silver Spirits Beverage Package in the past but have also not purchased it on some of our cruises. We are completely satisfied with the included wines that Viking offers, and we are not big cocktail drinkers. If you do enjoy a cocktail before or after dinner, then the Silver Spirits Beverage Package might be right for you.

I will say, that as a Travel Advisor that books clients on many different cruise lines the Viking Silver Spirits Beverage Package is one of the most affordable and best value on the rivers and oceans.

Bringing Your Own Wine or Spirits Onboard

Another feature many travellers appreciate about Viking is that guests are allowed to bring their own wine or spirits onboard.

Unlike some cruise lines that prohibit outside alcohol, Viking generally allows guests to bring bottles onboard when they embark or when returning from shore. These can be enjoyed in your stateroom or in most public areas of the ship.

If you choose to bring a bottle to the restaurant, Viking will open and pour for you and in my experience without any corkage fee. Many guests simply enjoy their own wine in their stateroom or on their veranda.

From my own experience sailing Viking, this policy contributes to the relaxed atmosphere onboard and gives guests additional flexibility if they prefer to bring a favourite bottle with them.

Friends of our love to have a Gin and Tonic before they leave their stateroom for dinner and they bring their favourite bottle of Gin with them for each cruise.

Long Haul Flights: Practical Tips That Actually Make the Journey Easier

Over the years, frequent travellers have developed small habits that make a surprisingly large difference. None of these ideas are complicated, but together they can make a long flight far more comfortable.

Choose your seat carefully

Your seat can make or break the experience on a long flight.

Many travellers prefer the window seat because it allows them to lean against the wall and control the window shade. Others prefer the aisle seat because it allows them to stand up, stretch, and walk around without disturbing anyone.

For me, there is no option other than the aisle seat. If we are flying Business Class which is often the indulgence for a 12+ hour flight then I don’t need to consider the seat as in the same way, or if we are in Premium Economy we are in two seats on the side.

On a long flight, the ability to move easily often matters more than the view. Being able to get up without climbing over someone can make the journey far more comfortable.

If possible, avoid the middle seat entirely. On flights lasting ten hours or more, the difference between an aisle or window seat and a middle seat becomes very noticeable.

If you are flying Economy Class some aircraft narrow at the back with several rows of two seats on the sides. If you are booking. Your seats early enough you may be able to score one of these rows. This is where booking flights early and choosing seats is in your favour.

Consider however, that seats close to a bulkhead may have infants close by, and also consider choosing seats away from the lavatories.

Prepare your entertainment before you leave home

Airlines offer in-flight entertainment, but you should never depend on it completely.

Download movies, podcasts, music, or shows to your device before you leave home. Streaming services usually allow offline viewing, and this gives you a backup if the seat screen is not working.

Personally, before every flight I download full seasons of my next watch on Netflix, or Prime, as well as movies, and documentaries.

A fully charged device and downloaded content can easily fill several hours of the flight.

There are nifty holders now that you can buy to attach your phone to the closed tray table that make watching on your phone much easier.

Bring a portable charger

Power outlets on aircraft are not always reliable. Some seats have them, some do not, and sometimes they stop working.

A small battery pack ensures your phone, tablet, or headphones do not run out of power halfway through the flight.

This becomes especially important if you rely on your phone for boarding passes, travel documents, or communication when you land.

NOTE however that some airlines now limit or restrict use of portable chargers while in flight, so ensure that you are charging your devices before boarding.

Pack a small in flight essentials pouch

One simple trick I use is packing a small pouch or bag inside their carry on that contains everything needed during the flight.

This can include items such as

• headphones
• eye mask
• lip balm
• moisturizer
• toothbrush
• charging cable
• medication
• snacks

Candy/mints

Having these items in a small pouch prevents you from repeatedly opening your overhead bag.

Move around regularly

Sitting for long periods is uncomfortable and can affect circulation.

If the seatbelt sign is off, stand up and walk the aisle periodically. Even a short walk every hour or two helps improve circulation and reduce stiffness.

You can also move your feet and legs while seated. Simple ankle rotations, foot pumps, and gentle stretching can help keep blood flowing.

Wear comfortable clothing

Cabin temperatures can change during a long flight, so wearing layers is helpful.

Loose clothing tends to be far more comfortable than tight clothing during long periods of sitting. Some travelers also wear compression socks to reduce swelling in their feet and legs.

Comfort should take priority over appearance on a flight that lasts half a day.

Hydrate more than you think you need

Airplane cabins are extremely dry. Dehydration can happen quickly, especially on overnight flights.

Drink water regularly during the flight, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Alcohol and excessive caffeine can increase dehydration, so moderate consumption is usually a good idea on long flights.

Do not watch the flight clock constantly

Watching the remaining flight time can make the journey feel longer.

Many experienced travelers avoid checking the map or countdown constantly. Instead, they break the flight into small segments.

For example, you might watch a movie, eat a meal, read for an hour, then try to sleep. Focusing on activities rather than time helps the flight pass more quickly.

Create a simple plan for sleeping

Sleep can make a long flight feel dramatically shorter.

Eye masks, neck pillows, and noise canceling headphones can help create a more restful environment. Don’t underestimate the value of a well-priced pair of over the ear noise cancelling headphones. If you are unlucky enough to have a crying baby/infant on your flight, noise cancelling headphones can save you.

If you are crossing time zones, it may also help to start adjusting your sleep schedule during the flight to better match the destination.

Take care of basic hygiene

After several hours in the air, even small routines can make you feel refreshed.

Brushing your teeth, washing your face, or applying moisturizer can help you feel human again during a long journey.

Many experienced travellers carry a small personal kit for exactly this purpose.

Be aware that bloating is common on long flights

Changes in cabin pressure and long periods of sitting can cause mild swelling or bloating.

Some travellers find it helpful to

• avoid carbonated drinks
• limit salty foods
• drink more water
• stretch periodically

Loose clothing also helps if your body retains fluid during long flights.

Use the galley for short breaks

On long international flights, the galley often has water, snacks, or beverages available between meal services.

Walking to the galley for a drink or snack also provides a good excuse to stretch your legs.

Note, that even though there can be snacks in the galley, many airlines now do not like passengers “hanging out” in the galley, and some actually state that it is not allowed.

Use the flight time productively if you want

A long flight can also become uninterrupted time to focus on something you rarely have time for.

Some travellers read an entire book. Others write, plan trips, organize photos, or simply think.

Being disconnected from normal distractions can actually be a surprisingly productive environment.

Additional tips frequent travellers often recommend

These ideas are not always mentioned in articles, but they are commonly used by experienced long haul travelers.

Eat lighter meals before the flight if you plan to sleep.

Set your watch to your destination time once you board.

Use noise canceling headphones if possible. Aircraft noise becomes tiring over many hours.

Bring your own refillable water bottle.

Avoid packing your carry on too tightly. You will want easy access to the things you need during the flight.

Accept that the flight is part of the journey as this one mindset shift helps more than any travel gadget.

A long flight is simply part of getting somewhere remarkable. Instead of fighting the experience, treating the flight as quiet time can make it far more enjoyable.

Sometimes the best strategy is simply settling in, relaxing, and letting the journey unfold.

Personally, I look forward to the flight, even if it is 12+ hours. This is part of the journey. I often see others negatively stressing about the long flight and I personally feel that boarding the aircraft stressed will make the experience less enjoyable.

Long Haul Flights for Cruise Travellers

For many cruise travellers, the long flight is the gateway to the experience.

River cruises in Europe, expedition voyages in Antarctica, and Mekong River journeys in Southeast Asia almost always involve long haul travel before the cruise even begins.

A few additional strategies can make the journey to your ship much easier.

Whenever possible, consider arriving one or more days early. This allows time to recover from jet lag and reduces the stress of travel delays.

Try to adjust your sleep schedule during the flight to match the destination time zone. Even a partial adjustment helps when you arrive.

Carry the essentials you would need if your luggage is delayed. This includes medications, one change of clothes, travel documents, and valuables.

And perhaps most importantly, remember that the journey is part of the adventure. Some of the most remarkable destinations in the world require a long flight to reach them.

Unlike many cruise lines that rely heavily on add-ons and packages, Viking is known for offering a more inclusive experience. This is true across both Viking Ocean and Viking River Cruises.

I first sailed Viking Ocean on a Mediterranean itinerary and immediately noticed how much was already included without needing upgrades or packages. This was my first ocean cruise, and this is how I became addicted to cruising. Over time, I have also helped many clients plan Viking journeys, and the inclusions are one of the reasons travellers consistently rate the experience so highly.

Below is a breakdown of what is generally included when you sail with Viking.

Accommodation and Shipboard Amenities
