Travel is one of life’s great joys. It opens doors to culture, history, cuisine, and experiences that stay with us forever. For many travellers with mobility challenges, cruising has become one of the most appealing ways to see the world. Ships provide accommodation, dining, and transportation in one place, often making travel easier than traditional land-based trips.

But there is an important reality that travellers should understand before embarking on a cruise to Europe, Asia, or other historic destinations around the world.

Accessibility standards outside North America can be very different from what we are used to at home.

The World Is Not Equally Accessible Everywhere

In North America, accessibility standards have improved dramatically over the past several decades. Ramps, elevators, accessible washrooms, curb cuts, and wide doorways are common in public buildings. Travellers who rely on wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, or canes often expect similar conditions everywhere.

However, many destinations around the world were built centuries before accessibility standards existed and there are no laws forcing these accessibility standards.

European cities are filled with medieval streets, narrow walkways, ancient staircases, and historic buildings protected by preservation laws. Many sidewalks are uneven, cobblestone streets are common, and older buildings may have steps but no ramps. Handrails may be missing, and elevators are often rare in historic districts, and some are so small, they only allow for one or two people standing, and may not accommodate a larger wheelchair. In parts of Asia and other regions, travellers may also encounter squat toilets, steep stairways, or public spaces not designed for wheelchair access.

These places are not intentionally excluding travellers with disabilities. In many cases they simply reflect the preservation of history.

I once heard a traveller ask a guide in a European city why the cobblestone streets were not paved over to make walking easier. The guide paused for a moment and replied thoughtfully: these streets have been here for more than one thousand years. They are part of our history. We would never pave over them.

That moment captured the tension between accessibility and preservation that exists in many parts of the world.

We arrive in destinations with expectations that conditions will be like home. Often they are not, and it is just a part of travel that we must accept.

Cruises Can Be Accessible, But Ports Are Different

Cruise ships themselves have made significant progress in accessibility. Most modern ships offer accessible staterooms, elevators, wide corridors, and accessible public spaces. Mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters are commonly used on board, and cruise lines generally accommodate them with planning.

Many travellers with limited mobility actually find cruises to be one of the easiest ways to travel. In surveys of cruise passengers with mobility limitations, a large majority report satisfaction with the assistance provided on board ships.

My personal observations with smaller ships and river cruises especially, is that ship gangways are not always ramps. Sometimes they are stepped and not accessible to a wheelchair. Often river longships “raft” in port and that could mean moving through one or two other ships to get to your ship. This is not a flat and clear path off or on your ship, rather a series of steps and short connecting gangways. These are not wheelchair friendly. I have also personally witnessed that ship Crew do not actively engage to help with this kind of embarkation and disembarkation, and that the individual that needs assistance must have family or friends with them to assist. This can be a liability and health and safety thing for ship's crew.

However, the biggest challenges usually arise once the ship reaches port.

Historic towns often have uneven surfaces and steep streets. Shops, cafés, and small restaurants may have steps at the entrance. Museums and historic sites may involve stairs or narrow passageways. Even when transportation is available, many shore excursion coaches are not equipped with wheelchair lifts.

In some ports, passengers must also use small tender boats to reach shore. Motorized wheelchairs and scooters often cannot be taken on these tenders unless special roll-on capability exists, which is not guaranteed, and actually rare.

Mobility Devices and Cruise Line Policies

Most cruise lines allow guests to bring manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, or mobility scooters on board. However, there are limitations that travellers should understand in advance. NOTE that many cruise lines require you to disclose the size and type of wheelchair or scooter in advance when booking, and some cruise lines do not allow or have limited bookings available for guests using wheelchairs.

Accessible staterooms are limited in number and must often be reserved early. Certain scooters or wheelchairs that exceed size limits may require accessible cabins or may not fit through standard cabin doors. In some cases, oversized devices could even prevent boarding if they cannot safely be accommodated. Most cruise lines do not allow the scooter or wheelchair to be left in the corridor, so they must be kept in the small cabin often taking up much of the free space.

River cruises can present additional challenges. Because river ships are smaller and docking conditions change frequently, some European river cruise operators restrict or discourage large mobility scooters entirely. Additionally, if the river cruise line does allow a manual wheelchair, or you rely on a cane or a walker, you must be aware that often the elevators on a river ship do not go to the lowest deck – where there are cabins – or to the sundeck on the top of the ship. If you are not capable of climbing stairs, then you will not have access to these decks.

These policies are not intended to exclude travellers. They exist because of physical limitations of ships, safety requirements, and emergency evacuation procedures.

The Importance of Planning Ahead

For travellers with mobility limitations, the most important step is planning ahead.

This is where speaking with an experienced Travel Advisor can make a significant difference. A knowledgeable advisor can help identify:

cruise ships with accessible cabins
itineraries with fewer tender ports
shore excursions designed for limited mobility
destinations that are easier to navigate
equipment rental options such as scooters delivered directly to the ship

Unfortunately, much of this information is not always obvious when travellers book trips online. Details about accessibility are often provided later in the booking process, when changing plans becomes more difficult.

Having these conversations early allows travellers to choose the right cruise, the right ship, and the right destinations for their specific mobility needs.

Travel Should Still Be Possible

Mobility challenges should never mean that travel dreams must end.

Cruising continues to evolve and accessibility is improving across the travel industry. Ships are being designed with better access, ports are gradually improving infrastructure, and tour operators are developing excursions specifically designed for travellers with limited mobility. It may be that you have to consider newer ships as older ships may be more difficult to accommodate a scooter or motorized wheelchair.

Recently I watched a couple that were both reliant on scooters to move about the ship have a very difficult time rolling on and off the elevators as the elevator lobbies were too narrow to give a decent turning radius. It was actually quite disheartening to watch, but even a bystander could not help because there just was not enough space. This ship was launched over 20 years ago, and just not designed with mobility restrictions in mind.

The reality remains that the world does not yet offer the same level of accessibility everywhere.

Understanding that reality ahead of time helps travellers avoid frustration and instead focus on destinations and experiences that truly work for them.

The goal is not to limit travel. The goal is to make travel possible.

With the right planning, the right expectations, and the right guidance, travellers with mobility challenges can still explore the world in meaningful and rewarding ways.

And sometimes the best journeys are the ones thoughtfully designed to match each traveller’s needs.

Why Arctic Travel Changes the Way You See the World

People often ask why someone would choose to travel to a place as remote as the Arctic?

The truth is that the Arctic has a way of changing the way travellers see the world.

Part of that comes from the landscape itself. The Arctic is vast in a way that is difficult to describe until you experience it. The horizon seems endless, the air is incredibly clear, and the quiet can be almost surreal. In many places there are no roads, no buildings, and no visible signs of modern life.

Then there is the wildlife. Seeing a polar bear moving across sea ice or watching whales surface in cold Arctic waters creates a connection to nature that is very different from seeing wildlife in more developed environments.

Another powerful aspect of Arctic travel comes from visiting the communities that live there. Inuit culture has adapted to this environment for thousands of years, and learning about their traditions and perspectives offers travellers a deeper understanding of life in one of the most challenging climates on Earth. This is part of what an Expedition like this is all about.

Expedition travel also encourages curiosity and learning. Days are filled with opportunities to explore, ask questions, and gain new insights about the environment and history of the region.

Are Shore Excursions Included on Viking Cruises?

One Shore Excursion Is Included in Every Port

On both Viking Ocean and Viking River cruises, one shore excursion in each port is typically included in the cruise fare.

These excursions are designed to introduce travellers to the highlights of each destination and usually include guided tours, transportation, and cultural experiences. I have heard many people say that these are probably only a city tour on a coach, but I have done most all of the destination included excursions and we have always been pleased, and some are quite extensive.

For example, a river cruise along the Danube might include a guided walking tour through historic city centers, while an ocean cruise in the Mediterranean may include visits to landmarks and historic sites.

Regardless of what you may hear or read, in my opinion, there is great value in the Viking included excursions.

Optional Excursions for Deeper Experiences

In addition to the included excursion, Viking offers optional excursions that can be purchased for travellers who want more in-depth or specialized experiences.

These might include:

• smaller group cultural tours
• culinary experiences
• active excursions such as biking or hiking
• extended historical tours

From my experience sailing Viking, the included excursions are generally well organized and provide a solid introduction to the destination. We always prefer these to walking around a city ourselves for the first time, because we have a guide to inform us what we are looking at. When you wander on your own, you don’t always have or gain the same knowledge of the destination.

Excursions are typically booked through the MyVikingJourney portal before the cruise.

Viking gives earlier access and booking priority of shore excursions to guests in higher stateroom categories. If you are in a lower category of cabin, you may be last on the list to book.

Now, this seems unfair, but as with many cruise lines, if you pay more, you receive more perks or amenities. We have never booked above the bottom two cabin categories of a Viking River or Ocean ship and we have never not ended up with the excursions we wanted. It is true that there is the occasional excursion that is strictly capacity controlled that may not be available at the time your booking window opens, but there are ways to address this.

I often advise clients to review excursions early because popular tours can fill quickly.

But fear not, here is a many time Viking repeat guest hack. If you cannot secure the shore excursion you want prior to boarding, make one of the first things you do be to visit Guest Services and ask about availability of the specific shore excursion you want. Often other guests will cancel and open spots. If this does not work you will meet the Shore Excursion Manager daily in the “Port Talk” and you will find that if you speak with this person they will do their utmost best to get you on that excursion. Yes, it is a bit of persistence, but it more often than not works.

Part of the Viking Philosophy

Viking has always positioned itself as a destination-focused cruise line. The idea is that the ship is the base from which you explore the region you are visiting.

Smartphones and Pickpockets: Your Phone Is Now the Top Target

A modern phone is effectively a traveller’s wallet, boarding pass holder, camera, map, translator, and travel planner all in one device. It may contain digital credit cards, airline tickets, cruise documents, hotel reservations, banking apps, and access to personal email accounts. Losing a phone is no longer just about the cost of replacing the device. It can disrupt an entire trip.

This is one thing you don’t want to lose, but if you do, it will happen quickly and you may not even notice immediately.

Because of this, phones have become the primary target for pickpockets and street thieves in many major travel destinations.

Police in London report tens of thousands of mobile phones stolen each year, with estimates commonly ranging between seventy and eighty thousand devices annually. That averages well over two hundred phones stolen every day. Across Europe, insurance industry data suggests roughly forty percent of reported mobile phone thefts occur in the United Kingdom, particularly in London’s crowded transit systems and tourist districts.

I am not picking on London, as there are other cities frequently associated with pickpocket activity including Paris, Barcelona, Rome, and parts of southern Europe where dense crowds gather around famous attractions, metro stations, and busy shopping streets. The pattern is similar in many large cities around the world. Anywhere travellers cluster together with phones in their hands becomes an attractive hunting ground for opportunistic thieves.

Staying Connected While Travellingis something more and more people are focused on. Our smartphones are our connection to the world in so many ways.

In recent years the method has also evolved. Traditional pickpocketing still occurs in crowds, but many thefts now involve quick “snatch and run” tactics. Thieves on bicycles, scooters, or even on foot may grab a phone directly from someone’s hand while they are texting or taking a photo.

For travellers, the phone has become one of the most valuable tools of the trip, so protecting it requires both digital security and simple situational awareness.

Recently as there have been events that have disrupted travel, your phone is a very important part if you are caught Travelling During Emergency Global Situations.

Before you travel, start with the basics of phone security.

Enable facial recognition or fingerprint authentication and use a strong passcode rather than a simple four-digit code. Turn on location tracking features such as Find My iPhone or Find My Device so the phone can be located or erased remotely if stolen. Make sure your photos and important data are backed up to the cloud so that losing the device does not mean losing your memories.

It is also wise to review the apps on your phone before leaving home. Remove apps you do not need for the trip and make sure payment apps require authentication before a purchase can be completed. Limiting what is accessible from your phone reduces the damage if it is stolen.

I am an Apple iPhone user through and through and I store nothing on my phone. Everything that I can access on my phone is accessed from my cloud storage. I use primarily Apple Pay, and that requires my facial recognition to activate. I have set up any critical App on my phone to require facial recognition to open.

Physical habits while travelling are just as important.

Keep your phone in a front pocket rather than a back pocket or open jacket pocket. Avoid placing it on café tables, restaurant counters, or bar tops where it can easily be picked up when you look away. In crowded areas such as transit stations, markets, festivals, or busy pedestrian streets, be especially aware of how visible your phone is.

Travellers should also be careful when using their phone for photos. One of the most common moments for theft is when someone holds a phone out while taking a picture of a landmark or filming a video. If you are photographing something popular, step slightly away from the crowd rather than standing in the middle of the pedestrian flow. Keep a firm grip on the phone and stay aware of anyone moving unusually close.

Some travellers also use simple accessories that add protection, such as a wrist strap or lanyard attached to the phone case. These small additions can prevent a thief from simply grabbing the phone and running.

There are also a few habits that help reduce risk across any type of travel.

Avoid walking while deeply focused on your phone, especially when navigating directions in unfamiliar areas. Step to the side of the street or sidewalk to check your map instead of stopping in the middle of a crowd.

Be cautious when someone bumps into you or creates a distraction. Pickpocketing often relies on distraction tactics that shift your attention away from your belongings.

Finally, back up your phone regularly while travelling. If you take photos throughout the day, upload them to the cloud when you return to your hotel at night. That way, even if the device disappears, the memories of the trip do not.

For cruise travellers, the risk is typically limited to time spent ashore in busy ports and cities. Cruise ships themselves are generally controlled environments with security and limited access, however we should never assume that there is not an opportunist on our cruise ship if we provide the opportunity. The same awareness that applies in any busy tourist area applies during shore excursions or independent exploration in port cities.

The good news is that most travellers will never experience phone theft during their trips. But as smartphones become more central to how we travel, they have also become more attractive targets for thieves. A few simple precautions can dramatically reduce the risk and help keep your trip running smoothly.

I have personally seen the tactics pickpockets use while travelling. Awareness and vigilance have allowed me to avoid their attempts. In my experience, protecting your smartphone and valuables is not complicated. Most of the time it simply comes down to situational awareness - knowing where you are, what is happening around you, and paying attention to how you carry your belongings.

Is Wi-Fi Free on Viking Cruises and How Good Is It?

How Viking Wi-Fi Works

Guests can access Wi-Fi using their personal devices anywhere on the ship.

This allows travelers to check email, send messages, and browse the internet during the voyage.

Speed and Reliability

Like all ships at sea, Viking relies on satellite internet. This means speeds can vary depending on location and weather conditions.

In my experience sailing Viking Ocean, the Wi-Fi was perfectly adequate for messaging, browsing, and checking travel details. You may also find it sufficient for checking and posting to Facebook and Instagram. You cannot count on streaming Netflix or other types of entertainment as this probably will not be supported.

When Wi-Fi Works Best

Wi-Fi speeds often improve when ships are near land or in port. As a Travel Advisor, I am often working even when I am travelling personally, and as an early riser, I find that the Wi-Fi speed is often at its best before everyone wakes each day and gets on their devices.

Many guests also use local mobile networks or eSIMs when visiting destinations during shore excursions, or when in port.

Part of the Viking Inclusive Experience

Complimentary Wi-Fi is one of the many features that make Viking cruises appealing to travellers who prefer a simpler, more inclusive experience.

There is “word in the wind” that Viking will continue to offer the existing Wi-Fi as an included amenity, however soon they may offer an upgraded experience for those who want need a higher bandwidth. This of course would be offered at a daily cost.

Why the Northwest Passage Is One of the Rarest Voyages You Can Take

In today’s world, it sometimes feels like every destination has already been discovered.

Popular cruise ports welcome thousands of visitors each day, and many well-known destinations appear on dozens of itineraries every season.

The Northwest Passage is completely different.

This legendary route through the Arctic can only be navigated during a short period each summer when sea ice retreats enough to allow ships to pass through the maze of islands that make up northern Canada. Even then, conditions can vary from year to year depending on ice and weather patterns.

Because of these challenges, only a small number of expedition ships attempt the crossing each season. Compared with traditional cruise itineraries, the number of travellers who experience the Northwest Passage each year is extremely small.

That rarity of this journey is part of what makes the journey so compelling.

The route travels through some of the most remote waters on Earth, weaving between Arctic islands, quiet fjords, and drifting ice. Many of the places visited along the way have no cruise infrastructure at all. Landings often take place in remote locations that can only be reached by small expedition boats.

For travellers who feel that modern tourism has become too crowded, the Northwest Passage offers something truly different. It is one of the few places left where you can still feel a genuine sense of exploration.

When you stand on deck looking out across the Arctic, it is easy to imagine what early explorers must have felt when they first attempted to navigate these same waterways centuries ago.

Few journeys today still carry that feeling.

Is the Viking Silver Spirits Beverage Package Worth It?

What the Silver Spirits Beverage Package Includes:

The Silver Spirits package allows guests to order cocktails, wines by the glass, and premium beverages throughout the day. Without this package, just a simple Coke will be charged to your account.

This includes most drinks in bars, lounges, and restaurants. There are some premium brands and wines that are not included, but very few.

When the Package Makes Sense

The package can be worthwhile for travellers who:

• enjoy cocktails or spirits regularly
• like wine outside meal times
• spend significant time in the ship’s lounges

When It May Not Be Necessary

Many Viking guests find they do not need the package because wine and beer are already included with lunch and dinner.

From my own experience sailing Viking Ocean and River, the included beverages during meals were often more than sufficient for most travellers, including ourselves. We sometimes buy it and sometimes do not. I don’t know if this will make sense to my readers, but when we travel alone as a couple, we often do NOT purchase the Viking Silver Spirits Package. When we travel with friends and family and we know that there will be quite a bit of socializing time before and after dinner we do in fact purchase the package.

Understanding the Viking Value

Viking’s approach is different from many cruise lines. Rather than requiring a beverage package to enjoy drinks with meals, Viking already includes beer and wine with your meals.

Now, I will comment that when it comes to pricing of the Silver Spirits Beverage Package, Viking’s pricing is very reasonable against other comparable cruise lines. Some competitive cruise lines in the same category can charge up to 3 times Viking.

Should You Travel With a Drone on a Cruise or in Europe?

Bringing a drone on a cruise or European vacation may sound like a great idea. Stunning aerial footage of historic cities, vineyards, coastlines, and cruise ships can seem irresistible when you are planning a trip. I once thought exactly the same thing before our Douro River cruise in Portugal. After going through the entire process and experiencing the realities firsthand, I can honestly say that travelling with a drone was far more effort than it was worth.

Before our trip, we spent months securing the required authorization from the Portuguese government and aviation authorities. We were issued an official signed document that we had to carry with us to prove our advance permission. Flying a drone legally in many European countries requires registration, permits, and sometimes insurance. In our case, we also needed written permission from the ship’s captain because cruise lines control what can be launched from the vessel. Even with all that preparation, the number of places where we were actually allowed to fly turned out to be extremely limited.

Many of the most beautiful places in Europe are protected cultural heritage sites. UNESCO locations often prohibit drone flights entirely. This includes historic districts, archaeological sites, and landmark viewpoints that travellers most want to capture from the air. The Douro Valley itself contains protected areas where drone use is restricted. Even when a drone is technically allowed, there may be additional rules about proximity to people, buildings, or transportation routes. Our drone was GPS controlled and even if we thought that we could fly in an area, the drone software recognized where it was not allowed to launch and would not launch.

Cities across Europe have strict drone laws that many travellers underestimate. In busy urban locations such as Lisbon, Rome, or Florence, regulations often restrict drone use when crowds are present. In some plazas there are limits on how many people can be in the square before drone flights are prohibited. While visiting Lisbon, we actually counted the number of people in a square and decided it was not legal to fly. Moments later another visitor launched a drone and within minutes police arrived and confiscated it.

There is also a social reality that many travellers do not think about until they experience it. Drones are noisy. In quiet countryside or historic towns, the sound of a drone carries surprisingly far. Even when you are technically allowed to fly, the humming noise can be very noticeable and often irritates people nearby who are trying to enjoy the scenery. We experienced this exactly. We were in a rural historic site with no city traffic or people noise. The sound of the drone was extremely evident and we overheard others making comments about how annoying that noise was. This is when we realized that our desire to have some aerial footage was actually impacting the experience of others.

Cruise travellers face additional complications. Many cruise lines allow drones to be carried onboard but restrict when or where they can be used. Flying from the ship itself is often prohibited for safety reasons. Even when permission is granted, there are technical challenges. Most consumer drones automatically return to the GPS point where they were launched. If the ship has moved during the flight, the drone may struggle to return to the vessel, or you may lose the drone in the water.

The result is that travellers often carry a drone for weeks and discover they rarely have an opportunity to use it legally or comfortably. Between permits, flight restrictions, cultural heritage protections, and local enforcement, the list of barriers grows quickly.

After returning home from that trip, we decided to sell our drone. Although we captured a few wonderful shots, we realized something important. There is an enormous amount of professional aerial footage available online. When creating travel videos or presentations, it is often easier and more practical to supplement your own footage with licensed aerial clips rather than carrying a drone around the world. We have many videos on our YouTube channel now that have licensed aerial footage that we obtained online. Were we there? Yes. Is every second of footage in our video from our cameras? No. However, we were there, and this aerial footage adds to the overall experience that we are sharing.

For most travellers, especially cruise passengers visiting historic cities, bringing a drone creates more complications than value. Between the regulations, the paperwork, the restrictions at UNESCO sites, and the potential for fines or confiscation, it is often far simpler to leave the drone at home and focus on enjoying the destination.

Wine and Beer with Meals

Across both Viking Ocean and Viking River ships, wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner.

This allows guests to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meals without needing a beverage package.

From my own experience sailing Viking Ocean, this works very well for most travellers because meals are relaxed and often last longer than typical cruise dining. We tend to linger in the dining room as there is no second seating that they are chasing you out to set up for.

Soft Drinks and Specialty Coffees

Coffee and tea are available throughout the day on Viking ships, with self-serve machines in venues such as the World Café and coffee is available in restaurants and lounges. River ships also provide espresso machines where guests can make specialty coffees such as cappuccinos or lattes.

Soft drinks and bottled water are typically included during meals, while additional beverages ordered outside mealtimes can be purchased individually or are included with the Silver Spirits Beverage Package.

This approach keeps the onboard experience simple and relaxed, allowing guests to enjoy many beverages without needing a package, while still offering optional upgrades for those who prefer a wider selection of drinks throughout the day.

Minibar in Staterooms

On Viking Ocean ships, all veranda staterooms include a minibar with soft drinks and snacks that are may be replenished daily and this depends on the cabin category you have reserved.

Some cabin categories include additional items such as wine and spirits.

The Silver Spirits Beverage Package

For travellers who prefer cocktails, drinks outside mealtimes, or premium wines, Viking offers the Silver Spirits beverage package.

Personal Perspective

Having sailed Viking River and Ocean on over 14 different itineraries now, I find that many travelers are perfectly satisfied with the included beverages. The atmosphere onboard tends to be relaxed rather than focused on nightlife or drinking simply to get the value out of the beverage package.

We have purchased the Silver Spirits Beverage Package in the past but have also not purchased it on some of our cruises. We are completely satisfied with the included wines that Viking offers, and we are not big cocktail drinkers. If you do enjoy a cocktail before or after dinner, then the Silver Spirits Beverage Package might be right for you.

I will say, that as a Travel Advisor that books clients on many different cruise lines the Viking Silver Spirits Beverage Package is one of the most affordable and best value on the rivers and oceans.

Bringing Your Own Wine or Spirits Onboard

Another feature many travellers appreciate about Viking is that guests are allowed to bring their own wine or spirits onboard.

Unlike some cruise lines that prohibit outside alcohol, Viking generally allows guests to bring bottles onboard when they embark or when returning from shore. These can be enjoyed in your stateroom or in most public areas of the ship.

If you choose to bring a bottle to the restaurant, Viking will open and pour for you and in my experience without any corkage fee. Many guests simply enjoy their own wine in their stateroom or on their veranda.

From my own experience sailing Viking, this policy contributes to the relaxed atmosphere onboard and gives guests additional flexibility if they prefer to bring a favourite bottle with them.

Friends of our love to have a Gin and Tonic before they leave their stateroom for dinner and they bring their favourite bottle of Gin with them for each cruise.

Long Haul Flights: Practical Tips That Actually Make the Journey Easier

Over the years, frequent travellers have developed small habits that make a surprisingly large difference. None of these ideas are complicated, but together they can make a long flight far more comfortable.

Choose your seat carefully

Your seat can make or break the experience on a long flight.

Many travellers prefer the window seat because it allows them to lean against the wall and control the window shade. Others prefer the aisle seat because it allows them to stand up, stretch, and walk around without disturbing anyone.

For me, there is no option other than the aisle seat. If we are flying Business Class which is often the indulgence for a 12+ hour flight then I don’t need to consider the seat as in the same way, or if we are in Premium Economy we are in two seats on the side.

On a long flight, the ability to move easily often matters more than the view. Being able to get up without climbing over someone can make the journey far more comfortable.

If possible, avoid the middle seat entirely. On flights lasting ten hours or more, the difference between an aisle or window seat and a middle seat becomes very noticeable.

If you are flying Economy Class some aircraft narrow at the back with several rows of two seats on the sides. If you are booking. Your seats early enough you may be able to score one of these rows. This is where booking flights early and choosing seats is in your favour.

Consider however, that seats close to a bulkhead may have infants close by, and also consider choosing seats away from the lavatories.

Prepare your entertainment before you leave home

Airlines offer in-flight entertainment, but you should never depend on it completely.

Download movies, podcasts, music, or shows to your device before you leave home. Streaming services usually allow offline viewing, and this gives you a backup if the seat screen is not working.

Personally, before every flight I download full seasons of my next watch on Netflix, or Prime, as well as movies, and documentaries.

A fully charged device and downloaded content can easily fill several hours of the flight.

There are nifty holders now that you can buy to attach your phone to the closed tray table that make watching on your phone much easier.

Bring a portable charger

Power outlets on aircraft are not always reliable. Some seats have them, some do not, and sometimes they stop working.

A small battery pack ensures your phone, tablet, or headphones do not run out of power halfway through the flight.

This becomes especially important if you rely on your phone for boarding passes, travel documents, or communication when you land.

NOTE however that some airlines now limit or restrict use of portable chargers while in flight, so ensure that you are charging your devices before boarding.

Pack a small in flight essentials pouch

One simple trick I use is packing a small pouch or bag inside their carry on that contains everything needed during the flight.

This can include items such as

• headphones
• eye mask
• lip balm
• moisturizer
• toothbrush
• charging cable
• medication
• snacks

Candy/mints

Having these items in a small pouch prevents you from repeatedly opening your overhead bag.

Move around regularly

Sitting for long periods is uncomfortable and can affect circulation.

If the seatbelt sign is off, stand up and walk the aisle periodically. Even a short walk every hour or two helps improve circulation and reduce stiffness.

You can also move your feet and legs while seated. Simple ankle rotations, foot pumps, and gentle stretching can help keep blood flowing.

Wear comfortable clothing

Cabin temperatures can change during a long flight, so wearing layers is helpful.

Loose clothing tends to be far more comfortable than tight clothing during long periods of sitting. Some travelers also wear compression socks to reduce swelling in their feet and legs.

Comfort should take priority over appearance on a flight that lasts half a day.

Hydrate more than you think you need

Airplane cabins are extremely dry. Dehydration can happen quickly, especially on overnight flights.

Drink water regularly during the flight, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Alcohol and excessive caffeine can increase dehydration, so moderate consumption is usually a good idea on long flights.

Do not watch the flight clock constantly

Watching the remaining flight time can make the journey feel longer.

Many experienced travelers avoid checking the map or countdown constantly. Instead, they break the flight into small segments.

For example, you might watch a movie, eat a meal, read for an hour, then try to sleep. Focusing on activities rather than time helps the flight pass more quickly.

Create a simple plan for sleeping

Sleep can make a long flight feel dramatically shorter.

Eye masks, neck pillows, and noise canceling headphones can help create a more restful environment. Don’t underestimate the value of a well-priced pair of over the ear noise cancelling headphones. If you are unlucky enough to have a crying baby/infant on your flight, noise cancelling headphones can save you.

If you are crossing time zones, it may also help to start adjusting your sleep schedule during the flight to better match the destination.

Take care of basic hygiene

After several hours in the air, even small routines can make you feel refreshed.

Brushing your teeth, washing your face, or applying moisturizer can help you feel human again during a long journey.

Many experienced travellers carry a small personal kit for exactly this purpose.

Be aware that bloating is common on long flights

Changes in cabin pressure and long periods of sitting can cause mild swelling or bloating.

Some travellers find it helpful to

• avoid carbonated drinks
• limit salty foods
• drink more water
• stretch periodically

Loose clothing also helps if your body retains fluid during long flights.

Use the galley for short breaks

On long international flights, the galley often has water, snacks, or beverages available between meal services.

Walking to the galley for a drink or snack also provides a good excuse to stretch your legs.

Note, that even though there can be snacks in the galley, many airlines now do not like passengers “hanging out” in the galley, and some actually state that it is not allowed.

Use the flight time productively if you want

A long flight can also become uninterrupted time to focus on something you rarely have time for.

Some travellers read an entire book. Others write, plan trips, organize photos, or simply think.

Being disconnected from normal distractions can actually be a surprisingly productive environment.

Additional tips frequent travellers often recommend

These ideas are not always mentioned in articles, but they are commonly used by experienced long haul travelers.

Eat lighter meals before the flight if you plan to sleep.

Set your watch to your destination time once you board.

Use noise canceling headphones if possible. Aircraft noise becomes tiring over many hours.

Bring your own refillable water bottle.

Avoid packing your carry on too tightly. You will want easy access to the things you need during the flight.

Accept that the flight is part of the journey as this one mindset shift helps more than any travel gadget.

A long flight is simply part of getting somewhere remarkable. Instead of fighting the experience, treating the flight as quiet time can make it far more enjoyable.

Sometimes the best strategy is simply settling in, relaxing, and letting the journey unfold.

Personally, I look forward to the flight, even if it is 12+ hours. This is part of the journey. I often see others negatively stressing about the long flight and I personally feel that boarding the aircraft stressed will make the experience less enjoyable.

Long Haul Flights for Cruise Travellers

For many cruise travellers, the long flight is the gateway to the experience.

River cruises in Europe, expedition voyages in Antarctica, and Mekong River journeys in Southeast Asia almost always involve long haul travel before the cruise even begins.

A few additional strategies can make the journey to your ship much easier.

Whenever possible, consider arriving one or more days early. This allows time to recover from jet lag and reduces the stress of travel delays.

Try to adjust your sleep schedule during the flight to match the destination time zone. Even a partial adjustment helps when you arrive.

Carry the essentials you would need if your luggage is delayed. This includes medications, one change of clothes, travel documents, and valuables.

And perhaps most importantly, remember that the journey is part of the adventure. Some of the most remarkable destinations in the world require a long flight to reach them.

• Cruise documents if applicable
• Credit card and local currency

Comfort items

• Neck pillow
• Eye mask
• Noise canceling headphones or earplugs
• Light sweater or scarf
• Compression socks

Personal care

• Toothbrush and small toothpaste
• Lip balm
• Hand cream or moisturizer
• Facial wipes
• Deodorant

Health and hydration

• Refillable water bottle
• Electrolyte packets if desired
• Basic medications
• Small healthy snacks

Technology

• Phone and charging cable
• Portable battery pack
• Tablet or e reader
• Downloaded movies, shows, or podcasts

Many experienced travellers keep these items in a small pouch that stays under the seat in front of them so they do not need to open the overhead bin during the flight.

Personally, this is where I use the larger Ziplock Zipper Bags. I have one that has the immediate essentials and I slip this into the seat pocket in front of me.

Unlike many cruise lines that rely heavily on add-ons and packages, Viking is known for offering a more inclusive experience. This is true across both Viking Ocean and Viking River Cruises.

I first sailed Viking Ocean on a Mediterranean itinerary and immediately noticed how much was already included without needing upgrades or packages. This was my first ocean cruise, and this is how I became addicted to cruising. Over time, I have also helped many clients plan Viking journeys, and the inclusions are one of the reasons travellers consistently rate the experience so highly.

Below is a breakdown of what is generally included when you sail with Viking.

Accommodation and Shipboard Amenities

Every Viking cruise includes your stateroom accommodation, daily housekeeping, and access to the ship’s public spaces. Viking ships are designed as smaller, destination-focused vessels with elegant Scandinavian styling.

Ocean ships include amenities such as the library curated by London bookseller Heywood Hill, multiple lounges, pools, and wellness areas. River ships feature panoramic lounges and sun decks designed to maximize the views along Europe’s waterways.

Dining and Restaurants

All Viking cruises include breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the ship’s main dining venues. Meals are open seating, meaning you can dine when you wish without fixed dining times.

On Viking Ocean ships, specialty restaurants such as Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant and The Chef’s Table are also included.

Wine, Beer, and Beverages

Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner across Viking Ocean and Viking River ships. Soft drinks, specialty coffees, and teas are also available throughout the day.

Shore Excursions

One shore excursion in each port is included with most Viking itineraries. These excursions are typically designed to provide a cultural introduction to the destination.
