Don't Ghost Your Travel Advisor

It happens more than you might think.

This is meant with all due respect, but ghosting is something that seems to happen more and more today and for some reason we are okay with it…

Someone reaches out with a dream trip in mind. Maybe it's a river cruise through Portugal. Maybe it's an expedition to the Arctic. The conversation starts well. They're excited, engaged, full of questions. I pull together pricing, check availability, map out an itinerary that fits their dates and their budget. Then the dates shift. No problem. I rework it. Then the cabin category changes. Still fine, this is what I do. A few more rounds of adjustments, a couple of calls, a revised proposal or two, and then…

Nothing.

No reply. No "thanks but we've decided to wait." No "we booked something else." Just silence. The travel industry has a word for this now, borrowed straight from modern dating culture: ghosting. And it is, I'll be honest, one of the more frustrating parts of this job.

I want to be clear — I am not writing this to shame anyone. People's lives get complicated. Plans fall apart. Budgets change. I understand all of that, and I hold no grudges. What I am writing this to do is to pull back the curtain a little, because most people genuinely do not realise what goes into the work that happens before a proposal lands in their inbox.

When you reach out to a travel advisor, a real specialist, not a search engine, you are accessing years of experience, supplier relationships, and destination knowledge that simply does not exist in a Google results page. When I research your trip, I am not clicking around a booking website. I am thinking through the nuances of your travel style, cross-referencing cabin availability against departure windows, factoring in your nationality for visa considerations, and building something that is specific to you. That work has real value. It takes real time.

Here is something most people do not realise about how travel advisors are compensated. I do not earn a salary. There is no hourly rate ticking away in the background while I research your trip, revise your itinerary, or spend an evening checking cabin availability across three departure dates. I work on commission — and that commission does not arrive until after you have travelled or sailed. Not when you book. Not when you pay your deposit. After the cruise happens. Which means that every hour I invest in a proposal that goes nowhere is simply unpaid work. I am not telling you this to make you feel guilty — I am telling you because most clients genuinely have no idea, and once they do, that one-line reply starts to feel a lot more reasonable to send.

The thing is, a quick message costs you nothing. If you've decided to postpone, book elsewhere, or simply move on — I would genuinely rather know. It lets me close the file, redirect my energy, and keep a cabin held open for someone who is ready to commit. Held space and held options are not unlimited. In the world of expedition cruising especially, where certain departures have fewer than a dozen cabins available, a polite "we're not going ahead" frees up something another traveller may have been waiting for.

There is also a practical reason to stay in touch rather than disappear: pricing and availability do not hold indefinitely. That quote I sent you? It was accurate on the day I sent it. If you circle back three months later and the ship has filled, or the early booking promotion has closed, we are starting again from a different place entirely. A brief check-in keeps the door open and often keeps the deal alive.

How Physically Demanding Is an Arctic Expedition Cruise?

Some of the most common questions I receive from travellers who are curious about the Northwest Passage have nothing to do with wildlife or itineraries or the history of Arctic exploration. They are questions about fitness. Questions about age. Questions that begin with something like: "Is this the kind of trip I could actually do?"

That question matters, and it deserves an honest answer.

When people hear the words "expedition travel," there is often an instinct to imagine something rugged and physically demanding — ice climbing, extreme cold, long days of strenuous hiking in remote wilderness. The word expedition carries a certain weight. And understandably, some travellers who would otherwise be drawn to a journey like the Northwest Passage talk themselves out of it before the conversation even begins.

The reality is quite different from that image.

Modern expedition cruising is designed to accommodate a genuinely wide range of travellers. The ships used by operators like HX Expeditions are built for the Arctic, but they are also built for comfort. Onboard amenities, warm public spaces, lecture halls, and observation lounges mean that at any point during the voyage, guests who want to stay aboard are welcome to do exactly that. There is no obligation to set foot on land, and there is no single standard of participation that everyone is expected to meet.

What expedition cruising offers instead is a spectrum of experiences that guests can move along based on their own energy, interest, and mobility on any given day. That flexibility is one of the things that makes this style of travel so well-suited to a wide range of travellers.

Understanding the Activity Levels

Most expedition ships structure their daily activities across several levels so that guests can self-select based on how they feel. A landing on Arctic tundra might include a gentle shoreline walk for those who want a slow pace and time to observe, a moderate guided hike across open terrain for those who enjoy some exercise, and a more ambitious exploration for those who want to push further. Guests choose where they fit on any given day, and that choice can change from one landing to the next.

What It's Really Like on an Arctic Expedition Cruise Ship

Kayaking is another option on many expeditions. For those who enjoy paddling in calm Arctic waters, it can be one of the most memorable parts of the voyage — gliding quietly alongside glaciers or watching wildlife from water level. But it is always optional. If kayaking is not your thing, there is no pressure to participate.

The Zodiac Experience

Almost every landing in the Arctic involves a Zodiac — the sturdy inflatable boats that serve as the connection between the ship and the places it cannot reach on its own. Understanding what that experience involves is worth addressing directly.

Boarding a Zodiac typically means stepping from a platform or gangway on the ship into the boat, with expedition staff positioned on both sides to assist. It requires a reasonable degree of balance and the ability to step across a modest gap with help. Once onboard, the ride itself is generally smooth and stable. The boats are well-suited to calm Arctic water, and the expedition team is with you for the entire excursion.

For travellers with limited mobility or who prefer not to attempt the Zodiac boarding, it is always worth speaking with the expedition team in advance. Many situations can be accommodated, and staff are experienced at working with guests across a wide range of physical conditions.

What the Landings Are Actually Like

Arctic terrain is real wilderness. Shorelines can be uneven. Tundra can be spongy and unpredictable underfoot. On some landings, the walk from the water to the area of interest involves a bit of careful footing. This is worth knowing.

But it is also worth knowing that expedition teams scout every landing in advance and choose routes with their guests in mind. Guides stay with the group, the pace is set by the group, and there is no expectation that anyone keep up with anyone else. For travellers who want to take things slowly and simply absorb the environment, that approach is entirely valid and in many ways the most rewarding.

The Arctic rewards patience more than speed. The guests who linger longest at a shoreline or sit quietly on a hillside are often the ones who see the polar bear or catch the light changing across the sea ice in a way that no photograph can quite capture.

Why Arctic Travel Changes the Way You See the World

The Support Around You

One of the things that reassures travellers once they are actually on an expedition voyage is how comprehensively they are looked after. Expedition staff are present on every Zodiac, at every landing, and throughout every activity. Safety briefings ensure that guests understand how each excursion works before they leave the ship. And if at any point a traveller decides they have done enough for the day, returning to the ship is never a complicated or embarrassing process.

The expedition team exists precisely to make all of this work, and they are very good at it.

What Really Matters

When travellers ask me whether an Arctic expedition is within their reach, I usually respond with a question of my own: Are you curious? Do you have a genuine interest in wild places, in history, in nature? Are you open to an environment that is unlike anything you have experienced before?

Those qualities matter far more than fitness level.

The most physically fit traveller who has no real curiosity about the Arctic will find the journey long. The traveller who moves slowly but looks at everything carefully, who asks questions, who stands on deck in the cold because the light on the ice is something they do not want to miss — that traveller will find the Northwest Passage one of the most extraordinary experiences of their life.

The latter above is me. When we were on our HX Expedition ship in Antarctica, we were on deck in every kind of weather because there was so much to see and experience.

Expedition cruising, at its best, is about curiosity and wonder. The ships, the staff, the structure of the activities — all of it is designed to make that possible for travellers across a very wide range of ages and abilities.

The Cruise Price You See Is Not the Price You Pay

The Story That Starts Every Conversation

I think about a client I'll call Sandra. She called me a couple of years ago, genuinely excited. She had found what she described as a fantastic deal on a cruise on a well-known mainstream line, seven nights in the Mediterranean, and the headline price looked terrific compared to what she had seen from Viking. In fact, it was several hundred dollars per person less. She wanted to know why I kept recommending Viking when this other option looked so much more affordable.

I asked her to pull up the booking page and walk me through it. By the time we finished, we had added the gratuities, the drinks package (because she and her husband enjoy wine with dinner), the Wi-Fi (she needed to check in on her business), two shore excursions, and specialty dining on two evenings. The total had climbed by more than $2,000 for the two of them. The "bargain" cruise was now priced within a few hundred dollars of the Viking sailing — which had already included all of those things, except gratuities. Viking can however have sailings where gratuities are included as a perk.

Sandra booked the Viking cruise.

I tell this story not to be clever, but because it is the most common conversation I have with new clients. The advertised price and the real price are rarely the same thing, and understanding the gap between them is the single most important step in comparing cruise lines honestly.

Why the Gap Exists

Cruise lines have two fundamental pricing models, and most travellers do not realize they are choosing between them.

The first is what I call the base-fare model. You buy a cabin, and everything else is available at an additional charge. Drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi, excursions, specialty restaurants — all of it goes on your onboard account. You settle up at the end of the sailing, sometimes to considerable surprise. These are typically the fares that generate the eye-catching promotional prices you see in advertisements.

The second is the inclusive model, where the headline fare already wraps in many or all of those items. Lines like Viking, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea operate this way. The upfront number looks higher, but the end-of-voyage bill is dramatically smaller — or in some cases, essentially zero beyond a few personal choices.

The important thing to understand is that neither model is inherently dishonest. The problem arises when travellers compare a base fare from one line with an inclusive fare from another and conclude that one is simply cheaper.

Many of my clients are not aware of how to navigate inclusions vs. exclusions in the pricing model. This is where I truly come into the picture as your cruise specialist. I have to admit, as I navigate the different cruise lines, I have to keep careful notes of what is and is not included.

What Gets Added On

Let me be specific, because the numbers matter.

Gratuities are the most consistently overlooked add-on. Most major mainstream cruise lines now charge a daily service fee added automatically to your onboard account. Depending on the line and cabin category, this typically runs between $17 and $25 per person, per day, and often including the children in the cabin as well. On a seven-night sailing for two people, that alone is $238 to $350 before you've ordered a single drink or stepped off the ship.

Drinks are next. If you enjoy wine with dinner, beer at the pool, or a cocktail in the evening, a drinks package is almost a necessity on base-fare lines. These packages run from roughly $60 to $105 per person, per day, depending on the level you select, and most lines require both passengers in a cabin to purchase the same package. On a seven-night cruise for two, that is a meaningful line item. NOTE that Viking's SSBP - Silver Spirits Beverage Package - is much more affordable if you want more than wine and beer at meals.

Wi-Fi is no longer a luxury — for most travellers it is an expectation, particularly those who are partially managing work or family responsibilities from the ship. Cruise ship Wi-Fi packages typically run between $15 and $30 per person, per day, again depending on speed tier.

Shore excursions can surprise people most of all. While many travellers intend to explore ports independently, the reality is that cruise line excursions offer convenience and reliability, particularly at ports where independent transport is complicated or time is limited. Budgeting $75 to $150 per person per port for organized excursions is a reasonable starting point for planning purposes. I have seen excursions to to $300, $400 + per person too.

Specialty dining adds another layer. The main dining room is always included, but signature restaurants aboard many ships carry per-person surcharges ranging from $30 to $80 or more per evening.

Add these together across a week at sea for two people, and the supplementary costs can easily reach $2,000 to $3,500 on top of the base cabin fare — sometimes more.

The Viking Comparison That Changes Everything

I use Viking as a reference point frequently because their model makes the comparison concrete.

Viking includes, within the standard fare, a shore excursion at every port of call, all onboard dining including specialty restaurants, beer and wine served with lunch and dinner, specialty coffee and soft drinks throughout the day, Wi-Fi for every passenger, access to their Nordic spa facility, and 24-hour room service. Their entry-level stateroom is a balcony cabin with a private veranda.

When a client shows me a Celebrity or similar itinerary priced several hundred dollars lower, my first question is always: have you priced in gratuities, drinks, Wi-Fi, and at least one excursion per port? When we do that arithmetic together, the gap narrows considerably. In some cases it disappears entirely. In others, the Viking fare is actually the better value — and in every case, the Viking experience comes without the ongoing decisions about what to spend and what to skip.

One detailed analysis comparing a seven-night Viking Mediterranean cruise with a similarly routed sailing on Celebrity found the final all-in costs within a few hundred dollars of each other — despite the Viking base fare appearing significantly higher at the outset. That several-hundred-dollar difference bought an entirely different experience: smaller ship, guaranteed balcony, no nickle-and-diming, and the simple pleasure of knowing your holiday cost was settled before you left home.

Sale Fares and What They Often Mean

The promotional cruise fares you see advertised deserve particular scrutiny.

Sales are real, and genuine savings are available — particularly when booking early or taking advantage of limited-time companion promotions. But the lowest fare in any sale is typically the most stripped-back option. On some lines, it may mean a guarantee cabin where your specific stateroom is not assigned until check-in. It almost always means a base fare with no inclusions, requiring you to add on everything separately, usually at a higher per-item cost than if you had booked a bundled package at the time of reservation.

This is not a criticism of how cruise lines market themselves. It is simply how the industry works, and knowing it changes how you should read any promotional price you encounter.

The honest question to ask of any cruise fare is not "what does it cost?" but "what does it include?" Those are two very different questions with two very different answers.

Now, I have clients that don't want a drinks package, and want to disconnect while onboard with NO Wi-Fi. This makes a contemporary cruise line more attractive, because let's face it, the lines that include these things - if you don't want or need them - are in fact inside that price. It is when you DO want these add-ons that it can make the difference.

What Truly Inclusive Looks Like

For context on what full inclusions mean at the upper end of the market, lines like Regent Seven Seas and Silversea operate on a genuinely all-in basis — unlimited shore excursions, all drinks, all dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and in some cases business class airfare. The per-person fares are higher, but for many travellers the arithmetic still makes sense when compared with adding every item separately on a base-fare line.

Viking sits one tier below this, offering what I would describe as nearly all-inclusive at an attainable price point. The only meaningful extras on a standard Viking sailing are premium wines and spirits (an optional package is available), spa treatments, and any additional excursions beyond the complimentary port tour. Gratiuities are also extra on a Viking sailing unless there is a promotion that includes gratuities.

A Practical Approach Before You Book

Before you decide that one cruise is more affordable than another, I'd encourage you to work through a simple exercise.

Take the advertised fare and add: daily gratuities for the full sailing, a drinks package appropriate to how you actually travel, Wi-Fi if you need it, one shore excursion per port of call, and any specialty dining you'd realistically enjoy. Write that number down.

Then look at an inclusive fare on a line like Viking, and write that number down.

In my experience, the two numbers are far closer than the original advertising suggests — and sometimes the "expensive" option turns out to be the better value.

This article is part 8 of my Northwest Passage expedition series. One of the most common questions travellers ask when they begin looking into Arctic expeditions is whether the experience will be physically demanding.

It is a fair question to ask. The words "expedition travel" tend to conjure images of something rugged and athletic, the kind of trip reserved for serious outdoor enthusiasts. The reality looks quite different. Modern expedition cruising has been built around flexibility, with most ships designed to welcome travellers across a wide range of mobility levels and activity preferences.

Arctic expedition ships typically structure their shore excursions and onboard programming so that guests can decide for themselves how active they want to be. Some people are drawn to hiking across tundra or paddling a kayak through still Arctic waters. Others are just as happy watching wildlife drift past from the ship's deck or taking a slower, more relaxed Zodiac tour along the coastline. There is no single "right" way to experience the Arctic, and the itinerary is built to reflect that.

Much of the daily exploration depends on the Zodiac boats, which deserve a mention of their own. These rugged inflatable boats are what get guests from the ship to shorelines and inlets that larger vessels simply cannot reach. Getting into one is straightforward: you step from the ship into the boat with help from a member of the expedition team standing right there to steady you. Once everyone is aboard, the ride itself tends to be smooth and stable, even for those who feel nervous about small boats.

Travellers who want to stretch their legs on land have plenty of options too. Most landings include guided walks across the Arctic terrain, and the difficulty varies quite a bit from one outing to the next. Some routes are flat and easy going, while others cover uneven ground or longer stretches. To account for this, expedition teams generally split guests into smaller groups based on pace and interest, so a brisk hiker and someone who prefers a slower stroll can both enjoy the same landing without either one feeling rushed or held back.

None of this is mandatory, and that is really the point. Anyone who would rather skip the landings can stay aboard the ship, settle into the observation lounge, sit in on a lecture from the expedition team, or simply watch the Arctic scenery pass by the window. There is no pressure to do more than feels comfortable.

Part of what puts travellers at ease is the sheer amount of support built into these voyages. The expedition staff are trained specifically to help guests on and off the boats and across uneven landing sites, and every excursion begins with a safety briefing so nobody heads ashore without understanding what to expect.

When it comes down to it, an Arctic expedition asks less of your body than people assume and more of your curiosity. Genuine interest in the natural world, a bit of a sense of adventure, and an openness to experiencing one of the most remote corners of the planet matter far more than physical fitness.

Online Travel Discount Sites: Real Deal or Marketing Illusion?

A friend recently came to me to book a hotel room. Like a lot of travelers, this person had spent years assuming that the big, heavily advertised booking sites always had the best price available. So before booking with me, the same friend checked one of the most popular online travel agencies, the kind that runs television ads telling you that you should have checked them first. Then the friend checked with me, the travel advisor. I beat the rate. In other cases, depending on the hotel and the dates, I have been able to at least match if not beat the reate. That is not a one off story. It happens often enough that it says something about how the online travel industry is built, and about the gap between the price you expect to get and the price you actually get.

None of this is meant as an attack on online travel agencies, often shortened to OTAs, as a category. They serve a real purpose, they are convenient, and for certain trips they are a perfectly reasonable way to book. The issue is narrower than that. It is the marketing message that says you will always get the best deal by booking through them, and that anyone who checked somewhere else, including a human advisor, simply did not look hard enough. That message is not accurate, and the data backs this up.

Why People Believe OTAs Are Always Cheapest

The belief that online travel sites are the cheapest option did not happen by accident. It is the direct result of enormous marketing spend designed to create exactly that impression. The global online travel booking market is projected to reach a valuation of roughly seven hundred billion US dollars in 2025, growing at a compound annual rate of about ten and a half percent through 2034. That kind of market size supports advertising budgets most individual travel agencies and even most hotel brands cannot come close to matching.

That advertising works because it taps into something psychologically real. Travellers increasingly research and book using online travel agencies, with about eighty percent of global travellers visiting these platforms within forty five days before making a purchase, and in 2023, fifty one percent of travellers booked through an online travel agency, compared to thirty seven percent who booked directly with an airline and twenty three percent who booked directly with a hotel. When a huge share of the traveling public starts their research on the same handful of sites, and those sites are the ones running the slogan about checking elsewhere, the slogan starts to feel like an established fact rather than a marketing line.

There is also a stickiness effect once someone starts using a particular site. Eighty percent of users booked with a single online travel agency in 2023, while only seventeen percent used two different platforms, which suggests that once people settle on a familiar app or website, they stop comparison shopping altogether. That is precisely the behaviour the big advertising budgets are designed to produce.

Where the "Always Cheapest" Story Breaks Down

The first crack in the always cheapest narrative is that prices vary far more across booking platforms than most travelers assume. One detailed comparison of fifty identical hotel and resort booking requests across eight different platforms found price variations of fifteen to thirty percent between the cheapest and most expensive platform for the exact same hotel and dates. If the spread between platforms can swing that widely, the idea that any single site is reliably the cheapest option for every booking simply does not hold up.

The second crack involves something the hotel industry calls rate parity. Hotel rate parity is the practice of keeping a property's rates consistent across every distribution channel, from online travel agencies to the hotel's own direct website, and online travel agencies typically collect a commission of around ten to thirty percent of the room rate after a guest checks out. Here is the part that matters for travellers: when a hotel has to pay a sizeable commission to a major OTA, and that OTA contractually requires the hotel not to undercut its advertised price anywhere else, the hotel has very little room to offer a meaningfully lower rate through any other channel, including a travel advisor working from a similar wholesale arrangement. In practice, this often means a knowledgeable advisor is not fighting an uphill battle to beat the OTA price, they are simply working from the same base rate without the layer of commission padding built into the advertised "deal."

Direct booking economics push in the same direction. OTA commissions typically run fifteen to twenty five percent per booking, while a reservation made directly with the hotel generates pure revenue for that property. Hotels know this, which is part of why many of them are willing to match or improve on a rate when a guest, or an advisor working on a guest's behalf, books through a different channel.

Then there is the matter of fees that do not show up in the headline price. In May 2012, the United States Federal Trade Commission held a conference on drip pricing focused specifically on resort and hotel fees added after a consumer arrives to check in, and following that conference, the FTC sent warning letters to twenty two hotel operators stating that their online reservation sites may be providing a deceptively low estimate of what a consumer will actually pay. The same FTC letters noted that mandatory resort fees for things like internet access or pool and gym use can run as high as thirty dollars a night, a figure that can clearly influence a traveler's purchasing decision, and that consumers often did not realize they would owe these fees until after booking. A price that looks like the best deal on the search results page can look quite different once those mandatory extras are added at checkout.

As a Travel Advisor, I am aware of these fees when you are booking. My booking sites highlight the full price inclusive of the fees payable to the hotel at checkout, so when I am quoting you a nightly rate, that fee is already accounted for.

What a Travel Advisor Actually Brings to the Price Comparison

This is where the personal story at the start of this article becomes more than an anecdote. A travel advisor who is doing the job properly is not guessing at pricing or relying on loyalty to a single platform. The advisor checks the same publicly advertised rates the traveler would see, then compares them against negotiated rates, supplier relationships, and sometimes promotions that are not published on a consumer facing website at all.

That does not mean an advisor wins every single comparison. There will be cases where a particular OTA promotion, a flash sale, or a loyalty discount produces a lower number than anything available through a traditional advisor channel. The honest claim is not that advisors always beat the big sites. It is that a good advisor checks the discount sites on every booking and, more often than not, comes back with a price that is the same or better, while also adding a layer of service, problem solving, and accountability that a self serve website does not offer when something goes wrong with the trip.

It is also worth noting that travellers themselves are increasingly recognizing this value. Travel agencies are projected to grow their market share by about five points by 2026, while OTA market share is projected to dip slightly over the same period, and the American Society of Travel Advisors reported in 2023 that half of travellers said they were more likely to use a travel advisor than they had been in the past. Thirty four percent of Millennials say they would book with a travel advisor over an online travel agency, and sixty percent of Millennials say they would be willing to pay more for an advisor's advice, recommendations, and destination knowledge. That shift did not happen because advisors got better at marketing. It happened because enough travellers had an experience similar to the one described at the start of this article, where checking both options revealed that the advertised deal was not actually unbeatable.

A Reasonable Way to Think About This Going Forward

None of this means online travel sites are a scam or that travellers should avoid them. They are a legitimate part of the travel ecosystem, they are convenient, and for simple, flexible bookings they can absolutely be the right tool. What this does mean is that the phrase "you should have checked us first" deserves some healthy skepticism. The price you see on the search results page is shaped by marketing budgets, commission structures, rate parity agreements, and sometimes fees that only appear at the end of the booking process. None of those things automatically make the OTA price the lowest one available.

The simplest takeaway is the one buried in the original story. Check more than one source before booking, whether that second source is a different OTA, the hotel directly, or a travel advisor who is willing to do the comparison for you. The data suggests that the spread between options is often large enough to be worth the extra few minutes, and in plenty of cases, the advertised deal is not the only deal in town.

The statistics in this article come from multiple sites and I am happy to supply them to anyone who cares to ask. The main message that I want to get across is that as a Travel Advisor, this is the reality that I experience everyday and I DO check the OTA's and find that my price is the same or better. When Is the Best Time to Book a Northwest Passage Expedition Cruise?

Expedition cruising operates very differently from traditional cruising, and the timing of when you book can make a real difference to both your options and your price.

Most expedition itineraries are released two to three years before departure. At first that can seem remarkably early, but there is a simple reason behind it. Expedition ships are small, often carrying only a hundred or two hundred passengers rather than the thousands you would find on a large ocean ship. That means the number of cabins available for any given sailing is tiny by comparison, and once those cabins are gone, they tend to stay gone.

Because of that limited capacity, the most sought after itineraries, the Northwest Passage among them, often begin filling soon after they are announced.

This will be my first journey to the Arctic, but I have sailed to Antarctica before, and that trip is a good example of how this plays out in practice. We booked that Antarctica expedition two years ahead of departure.

In recent months alone, we've seen headlines about hantavirus outbreaks, Ebola concerns in parts of Africa, measles cases in various countries, seasonal influenza surges, and ongoing discussions about respiratory illnesses on aircraft and cruise ships.

Despite all of that, I continue to travel frequently and enthusiastically.

I cruise. I fly internationally. I visit airports, hotels, museums, trains, buses, and crowded tourist attractions.

But there is one travel habit that I adopted several years ago and have never abandoned:

I always travel with masks.

Not because I am fearful of travelling.

Not because I expect something bad to happen.

And certainly not because I think people should avoid travel.

I carry masks because they are one of the simplest, lightest, and least expensive travel tools I can pack.

I am sure that some people think I am crazy… But, I don't care. Masks are always with me.

Masks Have Become Part of My Standard Travel Kit

Today, I always keep several masks in my sling bag.

That means they are immediately available if I feel the need to use one at a moment's notice.

I also carry additional masks in my carry-on luggage so I have enough for longer journeys, flights, airports, cruise terminals, trains, or unexpected situations.

Most of the time they stay in the bag and never get used.

But when I need one, I'm glad it's there.

When Do I Put On A Mask?

There isn't a specific rule.

Sometimes it's because I notice several people around me coughing heavily in an airport gate area. Sometimes it's because the passenger beside me on an aircraft appears visibly ill. Sometimes it's because a flight is completely full and I'm sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of other travellers for many hours. Sometimes it's because I'm feeling slightly run down myself and don't want to pick up something that could impact my vacation.

The beauty of carrying masks is that the decision can be made in seconds. I don't need to search for a pharmacy. I don't need to pay airport prices. I simply reach into my bag and put one on.

Travel Exposes Us To More People Than Everyday Life

One reality of travel is that we often encounter more people in a few days than we might normally see in weeks.

Consider a typical international trip. You may encounter people from dozens of countries in airports. You board aircraft carrying hundreds of passengers. You use buses, trains, taxis, ferries, and cruise ships. You visit restaurants, attractions, museums, and public spaces.

Before any international trip, I encourage travellers to think about more than just packing clothes and passports. In fact, 15 Things Travellers Forget Before International Flights highlights many of the small details that can make a big difference to your travel experience.

Most travellers will never experience any health issues during their trip. However, the sheer number of interactions naturally increases exposure to whatever viruses or illnesses may be circulating.

That's simply part of travelling.

Travel Is Still Worth It

It's important not to let headlines discourage you from exploring the world. Every year there are reports about outbreaks somewhere. Most remain localized and never affect the vast majority of travellers. Travel remains one of the most rewarding experiences available. You can explore ancient civilizations, experience different cultures, meet fascinating people, and create memories that last a lifetime.

The goal is not to avoid travel.

The goal is to travel smart.

One quick note about the most recent (May 2026) Hantavirus outbreak on a Dutch-Flagged cruise ship. Health officials now agree and believe that a Dutch couple contracted the Hantavirus BEFORE boarding the cruise ship. Right after the Hantavirus news struck, there were multiple social medial reels that kept popping up on my feed about Norovirus on Cruise Ships and how because of this you should not cruise. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics estimate that cruise ships account for only about 1% of all Norovirus outbreaks reported globally. Why am I highlighting this? News media and now social media “influencers” hype these things up to look worse than they are - in my opinion.

Part of travelling smart is setting yourself up for success from the very beginning of your journey. That's one reason I'm a strong believer that Why Cruise Travellers Should Never Fly In The Same Day As Their Cruise remains one of the most important pieces of advice I can give clients. Reducing stress, delays, and exhaustion helps keep you healthier throughout your trip.

Other Simple Health Precautions I Take

Masks are only one part of my travel routine.

I also:

• Wash my hands frequently.

• Carry hand sanitizer.

• Stay current with recommended vaccinations.

• Purchase comprehensive travel insurance.

• Monitor government travel advisories when appropriate.

• Get adequate rest before long journeys.

• Stay hydrated during flights.

None of these precautions are complicated.

Together, however, they help reduce risk and make travelling more enjoyable.

My Advice To Fellow Travellers

You don't need to be worried about every health headline you read. But you should be prepared.

A few masks weigh almost nothing, take up virtually no space, and cost very little.

Whether you ever use them or not, they provide flexibility and peace of mind when travelling through airports, aircraft cabins, cruise terminals, and other crowded environments.

This is especially true if you're planning a more remote journey such as an Arctic or Antarctic voyage, where preparation becomes even more important.

As for me?

My passport, phone charger, travel insurance documents, and a supply of masks will continue travelling together wherever I go.

Because some travel habits are simply too easy and too practical to leave behind.

Why You Should Never Assume Tap Water Is Free in Europe

Many Canadian and American travellers are surprised the first time they sit down in a European restaurant, ask for water, and are presented with a €7 bottle of mineral water instead of a complimentary glass from the tap.

Now, a court case in Italy has pushed the issue into international headlines.

Italy’s highest court recently ruled that a luxury hotel in the Dolomites acted lawfully when it refused to provide tap water to a guest dining in its restaurant. The traveller argued that water is a universal human right and should be included as part of normal hospitality. The court disagreed, confirming that Italian restaurants and hotels are under no legal obligation to provide tap water to guests.

For North American travellers, this often feels shocking.

In Canada and much of the United States, free tap water in restaurants is essentially expected. In many parts of Europe, however, bottled water is deeply embedded in dining culture, and complimentary tap water is far from universal.

Europe Is Not One Uniform Experience

One of the biggest mistakes travellers make is assuming “Europe” operates under one set of customs.

It doesn’t.

Some countries legally require restaurants to provide tap water free of charge. Others allow restaurants to refuse completely. In some destinations, free water is culturally normal even without a law. In others, asking for tap water may be viewed as unusual or even impolite.

One lesson I have learned and also observed, is if you just ask for “water” you will more than likely be served a bottle of water with a charge on your bill.

If you want “tap water” then you must ask for that specifically, and then you will quickly find out if the restaurant is going to serve you tap water. Bear in mind however, there could still be a charge for serving tap water.

Countries Where You May Be Charged or Refused

Travellers are more likely to encounter paid bottled water culture in:

Italy
Germany
Netherlands
Czech Republic and Poland
Bulgaria and parts of Eastern Europe

Bottled water culture remains strong in some countries due to local perceptions around tap water quality.

Why Europeans Often Buy Bottled Water

This issue is not only about profit.

In many European countries:

• Mineral water culture is generations old
• Sparkling water is more common than still water
• Diners often view bottled water as part of the restaurant experience
• Local tap water may contain high mineral content or strong taste variations
• Restaurants rely heavily on beverage sales for profit margins

In Italy particularly, ordering bottled still or sparkling water is considered completely normal dining etiquette.

The Environmental Shift Happening Across Europe

At the same time, Europe is slowly changing.

The European Union has introduced broader drinking water initiatives aimed at reducing plastic bottle consumption and encouraging access to tap water. However, current EU rules largely encourage restaurants to provide water rather than mandate it universally.

There are also discussions within the EU about future regulations that could require restaurants to offer tap water either free or at minimal cost.

So while travellers may still encounter resistance today, attitudes are gradually evolving.

Practical Advice for Travellers

If you are travelling in Europe, especially on a cruise extension or land tour, here are a few practical tips:

• Never assume water is complimentary
• Ask specifically for “tap water” if that is what you want
• Expect bottled water charges in many restaurants

Personally, I am a traveller that rarely drinks tap water anywhere outside of my home. Why? Because water is that unknown source of potential gastrointestional upset that you just don't want when you are travelling.

The Bigger Lesson for Travellers

This story is really about something larger than water.

Travel reminds us that customs we consider “normal” at home are not universal.

I have said this before, and will say it again and again, that if you want things the way they are at home, then you should not be travelling…. For me, the differences that I encounter when travelling from home customs are one of the allures of travel.

Something as simple as ordering water can become a lesson in culture, hospitality, sustainability, economics, and social expectations.

And honestly, that is part of what makes travel so fascinating.

Everything about the journey is more complicated.

Why I Never Recommend Flying To Your Cruise On Embarkation Day

Could you get away with it? Absolutely.

Many travellers do.

But after years of travelling myself, booking cruises for clients, and watching airline disruptions become more common, I can honestly say that flying in at least one day early is one of the smartest travel decisions you can make.

Ironically, I have personally never missed a cruise. In fact, I almost always arrive at least one day before embarkation. But recently, even with that buffer built in, I experienced several horrendous flight delays and tight connections that reminded me just how vulnerable travellers really are when relying on same-day flights.

These delays were with border control in Frankfurt Airport. Lines were 2+ hours long and with my connection only 90-minutes, I can say that we were sweating it a bit. With some persuasive pleading, we were moved up in line - in fact there were about 20 of us on the same connection. We made it to the gate - running - with only minutes to spare.

Had those experiences happened on embarkation day itself, there is a very real possibility I could have missed the ship.

And unlike a hotel reservation, a cruise ship does not wait for late passengers.

Cruise Ships Operate On Tight Schedules

Modern cruise itineraries are tightly coordinated operations involving:

• Port authorities
• Fuel scheduling
• Crew logistics
• Immigration clearance
• Shore excursion timing
• Arrival slots at future ports

If a ship is scheduled to depart at 5:00 PM, it is often required that all passengers be onboard much earlier, sometimes by 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM.

Even if your flight only arrives “a little late,” that delay can quickly snowball into a disaster.

A delayed departure from your home airport could cause:

• A missed connection wherever you are connecting
• A baggage delay
• A two-hour passport control line
• Traffic congestion getting to the port - and this I have experienced for real!
• A missed embarkation cutoff

At that point, the cruise line may deny boarding.

And now you are trying to catch up to a ship that may already be sailing toward another country.

Airline Delays Are More Common Than Many Travellers Realize

Since the pandemic, airline operations have become far less predictable.

I regularly see issues involving:

• Aircraft swaps
• Crew shortages
• Weather disruptions
• Mechanical delays
• Missed connections
• Airport staffing issues
• Air traffic congestion
• Delayed baggage handling

Even if your first flight leaves on time, your connecting flight may not.

I recently experienced connection issues myself despite travelling a day early. Sitting in airports watching departure boards change repeatedly is stressful enough when you know your cruise is tomorrow.

I cannot imagine that same stress knowing the ship departs in only a few hours.

International Cruises Add Even More Risk

Flying same-day for a Caribbean cruise from Florida is risky enough, but international cruises create even more variables.

For example:

• European river cruises
• Mediterranean cruises
• Alaska cruises requiring connections
• Expedition cruises
• Cruises departing from Asia, Australia, or South America

These itineraries often involve:

• Long-haul flights
• Multiple flight segments
• Immigration processing
• Customs delays
• Different airlines on separate tickets
• Overnight airport disruptions

One missed connection can collapse the entire itinerary.

And if your cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience like Antarctica, the Galápagos, or the Northwest Passage, the financial consequences can be enormous.

Weather Can Destroy The Best Planned Itinerary

Many travellers underestimate how weather in one city can affect flights across an entire continent.

You may be flying from sunny Toronto to sunny Fort Lauderdale, but thunderstorms in Atlanta or Chicago can still disrupt your aircraft routing.

Winter travellers face even more challenges:

• De-icing delays

15 Things Travellers Forget Before International Flights

International travel can be exciting, but even experienced travellers sometimes forget important details before heading to the airport. Unfortunately, small mistakes before an international flight can quickly turn into expensive problems, unnecessary stress, missed flights, or ruined vacations.

As a travel advisor, I often see travellers focus heavily on the destination while overlooking critical parts of the actual travel process. The reality is that international travel preparation starts long before boarding the aircraft. I add some personal experience with most of the points below.

Here are 15 things travellers commonly forget before international flights — and why they matter more than most people realize.

1. Checking Passport Expiry Dates

Many countries require your passport to remain valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Some travellers only discover this requirement at airport check-in.

Always verify passport validity several months before international travel.

TOWK Tip: Put a calendar reminder on your smart phone for 6-months before your passport expires to start the renewal process.

2. Understanding Visa and Entry Requirements

Entry rules continue to evolve around the world. Some countries require visas, electronic authorizations, proof of onward travel, or health documentation.

Canadian travellers should always verify official government entry requirements before departure.

3. Informing Their Credit Card Company

Unexpected international charges can trigger fraud alerts and temporarily lock your cards. Advising your bank of travel plans may help avoid disruptions while abroad.

It is also wise to travel with more than one credit card.

TOWK Tip: My personal Credit Card company does not require travel notifications, but many still take them.

4. Purchasing Travel Insurance

Many travellers assume nothing will go wrong until flights are delayed, luggage disappears, or medical emergencies happen overseas.

Travel insurance can help protect travellers from unexpected medical costs, trip interruptions, cancellations, and baggage issues during international travel.

TOWK Tip: Don't leave home without insurance. We don't know what will happen that will create a need for insurance.

5. Downloading Airline Apps

Airline apps often provide real-time gate changes, delays, boarding notifications, and baggage tracking.

During irregular operations, app users sometimes receive rebooking options before airport lines even begin moving.

TOWK Tip: These Apps keep you in the know, but you must have a data package, or be connected to the airline or airport Wi-Fi.

6. Charging Devices Before Departure

Airport charging stations are not always available, and aircraft power outlets do occasionally fail.

Experienced travellers often board long-haul flights with fully charged phones, tablets, headphones, and portable battery packs.

TOWK Tip: Be aware that battery packs / battery backups are under more and more scrutiny all the time. Be aware of the current regulations and these can change by airline. Some airlines are not allowing their use during flight.

7. Bringing Essential Medications In Carry-On Bags

Medications should never be packed in checked luggage. Lost bags and delays happen more often than travellers expect.

Important medications, prescriptions, and basic medical supplies should always stay with you onboard.

TOWK Tip: Medications should just always be with you.

8. Checking International Roaming Plans

International roaming charges can become shockingly expensive without proper planning.

Travellers should understand their mobile provider’s travel plans, eSIM options, cruise ship roaming charges, and Wi-Fi limitations before departure.

TOWK Tip: Not widely known, but many Canadian providers now offer “packages” for roaming that are cheaper than the daily rate.

9. Packing A Change Of Clothes In Carry-On Luggage

Delayed luggage can turn the first day of a trip into a stressful experience.

A lightweight change of clothes, toiletries, chargers, and essential items in your carry-on can make a major difference if checked bags are delayed.

TOWK Tip: Our last time luggage was delayed was in Egypt before our Nile River Cruise. Those lightweight changes in the carry-on saved us for the 3-days waiting for our luggage to catch up to us.

10. Wearing Comfortable Clothing For Long Flights

Tight clothing and poor footwear can make long-haul flights far more uncomfortable than necessary.

Experienced travellers usually prioritize layers, breathable fabrics, and comfort over airport fashion.

TOWK Tip: We bought “Spa Slippers” on Amazon. These are basically disposable slippers. On a long-haul flight these make your feet so much more comfortable, and it keeps your feet from one of the dirtiest parts of the aircraft - the floor.

11. Bringing A Refillable Water Bottle

Aircraft cabins are extremely dry, and dehydration contributes heavily to travel fatigue and jet lag.

An empty refillable bottle can easily be filled after airport security.

TOWK Tip: This is the way to go for sure.

12. Checking Airport Connection Times

Not all flight connections are equal. Some international airports require lengthy terminal transfers, passport control, security re-screening, or train connections between gates.

Short connections may look fine on paper but can become risky in reality.

TOWK Tip: ALERT! With EES and ETIAS coming into place in Europe and the Schengen Region, connection times are key. Be very aware that some airports will almost promise to have you miss your connection. My suggestion now until EES and ETIAS are settled is a minimum 3 hours connection time in Europe and the Schengen Region.

13. Downloading Maps And Travel Documents Offline

Airport Wi-Fi and mobile coverage are not always reliable after arrival.

Experienced international travellers often download maps, hotel information, boarding passes, and key documents before leaving home.

TOWK Tip: Don't rely on having Wi-Fi or a great data connection. I download everything that I think I might need on my phone so that as long as I have battery, I can get to the information I need.

14. Checking Weather At Their Destination

Many travellers only check temperatures and forget about humidity, rain seasons, wind, or altitude conditions.

Weather can dramatically affect packing decisions, excursions, and overall comfort during a trip.

TOWK Tip: The real fact is that now - IMO - weather does not follow historical patterns. I have learned to pack light that covers hot, cold, and everything inbetween.

15. Arriving At The Airport Early Enough

International travel typically requires more time than domestic flights due to passport checks, baggage processing, customs procedures, and security screening.

Arriving early reduces stress and provides a buffer when airports become unexpectedly busy.

TOWK Tip: We hear horror stories of lines and delays with Security, and although most of the time I feel many of these reels are clickbait, it does and can happen. Don't cut your time short. On a departure day, I feel that I can wait at home, or be safe and wait at the airport. We also invest in a credit card that gives us lounge access and this is a much easier wait than at the boarding gate.

Final Thoughts

International travel is one of life’s great experiences, but preparation matters. Many common travel problems begin before travellers even board the aircraft.

A few simple steps before departure can dramatically reduce stress, improve comfort, and help travellers enjoy their vacation from the very beginning instead of starting the journey frustrated and exhausted.

Why Luxury Cruises Rarely Go On Sale (And Why Waiting Often Costs More)

In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see travellers make is waiting for a “better deal” on a luxury cruise, only to discover months later that the price has increased dramatically, the best cabins are gone, and many of the valuable promotions have disappeared.

After years of watching pricing trends across cruise lines like Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Explora Journeys, I can confidently say this:

Luxury cruises rarely become cheaper closer to sailing.

In many cases, they become significantly more expensive.

Luxury Cruise Pricing Is Based On Inventory, Not Empty Cabins

Luxury cruise lines operate very differently from mass-market cruise lines.

Most luxury ships are smaller and carry far fewer guests. A river cruise ship may carry only 150 passengers. An expedition ship may carry fewer than 200. Even many luxury ocean ships carry dramatically fewer guests than the mega-ships operated by larger mainstream brands.

That means inventory is limited from day one.

Unlike airlines trying to fill hundreds of remaining seats at the last minute, luxury cruise lines often sell a large portion of their inventory many months — and sometimes years — in advance.

When the best cabins begin disappearing, prices usually rise, not fall.

The cruise lines know demand is strong, and they use sophisticated yield management systems that continuously adjust pricing based on:
• cabin availability
• booking pace
• sailing popularity
• destination demand
• seasonality
• suite category demand
• historical performance

The earlier you book, the more likely you are to secure:
• lower introductory pricing
• preferred cabin locations
• better airfare promotions
• included perks
• reduced deposits
• bonus shore excursions
• beverage packages or onboard credit offers

As availability shrinks, those promotions often disappear.

Real Examples I’ve Personally Seen

I often tell clients that booking early can save thousands of dollars, but this is not theory. I have watched it happen repeatedly.

One example involved a 15-day Australia and New Zealand voyage with Viking.

When the itinerary was first released, the pricing was approximately CAD $8,000 per person for the category booked.

Less than two years later, the exact same sailing, same ship, same cabin category, and same departure period had risen to approximately CAD $16,000 per person.

That is roughly a CAD $16,000 difference per cabin for two travellers.

Another example involved a British Isles itinerary where the exact same cabin category increased by more than CAD $15,000 per cabin between the original booking period and the later pricing cycle.

I have also seen similar increases with river cruises, especially for:
• Christmas Markets sailings
• Tulip season itineraries
• Mekong River cruises
• Bordeaux wine itineraries
• Popular expedition voyages
• Suites and higher-category cabins

Luxury inventory disappears faster than many travellers realize.

Why Cruise Lines Do Not Want To Train Travellers To Wait

Luxury cruise lines are carefully managed businesses.

They do not want to encourage travellers to delay booking until the final months before departure.

If cruise lines regularly slashed prices near sailing, experienced travellers would simply wait.

That creates operational problems for the cruise lines:
• unpredictable revenue forecasting
• staffing uncertainty
• excursion planning complications
• airfare coordination issues
• inventory instability

Instead, luxury lines reward travellers who commit early.

That is why launch pricing can sometimes represent the best overall value a traveller will ever see for a particular sailing.

The Best Cabins Usually Sell First

Another misconception is that all cabins are equal.

They are not.

On many ships, certain cabins are considered highly desirable because of:
• larger balconies
• mid-ship location
• proximity to elevators
• better views
• reduced motion
• larger bathrooms
• upgraded suite benefits
• connecting options for families

Those cabins often disappear very early.

By waiting, travellers may still find “a cabin,” but not necessarily the cabin they truly wanted.

This becomes especially important on:
• river cruises
• expedition cruises
• small luxury ships
• world cruises
• holiday sailings
• unique itineraries with limited departures

Last-Minute Deals Still Exist — But Usually Not Where People Think

Yes, there are occasionally last-minute cruise deals.

But they are far more common in:
• mass-market cruising
• off-season departures
• undesirable cabin categories
• repositioning cruises
• sailings with weak demand

They are far less common on highly sought-after luxury itineraries.

And even when lower fares appear late in the booking cycle, travellers may still face:
• expensive airfare
• poor flight schedules
• limited hotel availability
• fewer excursion choices
• reduced cabin selection

The “savings” are not always true savings.

Why Working With A Cruise Advisor Matters

One of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced cruise advisor is understanding booking timing.

Sometimes booking immediately makes sense.

Sometimes waiting for a new promotion makes sense.

Sometimes holding a cabin before airfare opens is the smartest strategy.

An experienced advisor can help travellers:
• monitor pricing
• understand promotions
• compare inclusions
• select the right cabin
• evaluate cancellation terms
• coordinate flights and insurance
• avoid expensive mistakes

Most importantly, a good advisor helps travellers understand value, not just price.

Because in luxury travel, the cheapest option is not always the best value.

And waiting for a “sale” may end up costing far more than booking early.

River Cruise Cabin Types Explained

One of the most common questions I receive from clients planning their first river cruise is surprisingly simple:

“What cabin should I book?”

Unlike ocean cruises where balconies are common, river ships are narrower and space is more limited. This means the type of cabin you choose can significantly shape your experience onboard.

Having sailed on multiple river cruise lines myself, I’ve noticed that the cabin terminology can be confusing. A French Balcony on one line may be very different from a Veranda on another. Some ships also have lower-deck cabins referred to Fixed Window Cabins, which come with their own pros and cons.

Let’s walk through the major cabin types and how they compare across three of the most popular premium river cruise lines: Viking, AmaWaterways, and Uniworld.

Understanding the Main River Cruise Cabin Types

Most river ships offer four broad categories of accommodations:

Lower-deck river view cabins
French Balcony cabins
Veranda or step-out balcony cabins
Suites

Each category offers a different combination of space, views, and price.

Fixed Window Cabins - The Lead-In River View Option

These cabins are typically located on the lowest passenger deck, close to the waterline. Because of their position, the windows are usually smaller and may sit partially at water level.

They are known by different names depending on the cruise line, and I more often stay in one of these myself. More on this later.

Viking

Viking calls these Standard Staterooms, generally located on the lower deck of their Longships. They feature a fixed river-view window rather than a balcony door.

Uniworld

Uniworld typically calls these Classic staterooms, which also feature fixed windows rather than balconies.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways often labels these as Window Staterooms on the lowest deck.

When these cabins make sense

They are often the most affordable way to experience river cruising. Since guests spend most of their time exploring destinations rather than sitting in the room, many experienced travellers happily choose them.

I am going to add a paragraph or two at the end to explain why I book these cabins and river cruising facts in general that may influence your cabin choice.

However, you should know a few things:

Windows are smaller and closer to the waterline
Passing lock walls can be close to the window
Views may occasionally be blocked when ships dock side-by-side

For travellers who care more about the itinerary than the room itself, they can represent excellent value.

French Balcony Cabins

The Most Common River Cruise Cabin

A French balcony is not a step-out balcony.

Instead, it is a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door with a railing, allowing fresh air and unobstructed views, but no outdoor seating area.

These cabins are extremely popular because they bring the outside scenery directly into the room.

Viking

Viking French Balcony staterooms are typically around 135 sq ft, featuring sliding glass doors that open to a railing.

They are found on the upper decks of Viking Longships and offer a bright interior with direct views of the river.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways offers French Balcony cabins on some ships, that can be from 155-170 sq ft depending on the ship. Many of their newer vessels replaced them with their signature Twin Balcony design, which I’ll explain next.

Uniworld

Uniworld ships frequently feature French Balcony staterooms around 18 m² (about 194 sq ft) depending on the vessel.

These rooms often feature luxury touches such as handcrafted beds, marble bathrooms, and premium bath amenities.

Why travellers like French balconies

They offer:

Natural light
Fresh air
Great views while cruising scenic stretches of river

For many travellers, this is the sweet spot of value and experience.

Veranda or Step-Out Balcony Cabins

A Veranda cabin includes a true outdoor balcony with space to sit, typically with chairs and a small table.

These are less common on river ships simply because of space limitations.

Viking

Viking offers Veranda Staterooms of roughly 205 sq ft, including a private step-out balcony.

These cabins are larger than French Balcony rooms and include seating areas inside the cabin.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways has arguably one of the most distinctive designs in river cruising.

Their ships introduced the concept of Twin Balconies, which combine:

• A French balcony inside
• A step-out veranda outside

This design allows guests to enjoy the view in any weather.

Twin Balcony staterooms typically range from 210–235 sq ft depending on category. (

Uniworld

Some Uniworld ships offer Deluxe Balcony rooms with enclosed balconies or floor-to-ceiling windows that create a balcony-style space within the cabin.

The emphasis on Uniworld ships tends to be more on luxury interiors and larger room sizes rather than large outdoor balconies.

Suites

Space, Separation, and Additional Services

Suites are the most spacious accommodations on river ships and often include:

• Separate living areas
• Larger bathrooms
• Enhanced service levels

Viking Suites

Viking Longships feature Veranda Suites and Explorer Suites.

These often include:

Separate living room and bedroom
A veranda plus a French balcony
Significantly larger living space.

AmaWaterways Suites

AmaWaterways suites typically feature the Twin Balcony design, offering both balcony types plus additional interior space.

Uniworld Suites

Uniworld suites lean heavily into the luxury boutique hotel experience, with features like:

• marble bathrooms
• expanded living areas
• butler service for suite guests.

These suites can reach over 400 sq ft on some ships.

Key Differences Between the Three Cruise Lines

Although the cabin categories appear similar, each cruise line approaches design differently.

Viking

Scandinavian design
Clear, simple cabin categories
True veranda cabins available
Suites include both veranda and French balcony

AmaWaterways

Known for the Twin Balcony innovation
Very popular with travellers who want outdoor seating plus panoramic views
Multiple cabin layouts across most ships

Uniworld

Strong focus on luxury interiors and boutique design
Fewer traditional step-out balconies
Larger rooms and high-end finishes

My Advice When Choosing a River Cruise Cabin

Having experienced these ships personally, here are a few practical thoughts I share with clients.

If your budget allows it, I usually recommend at least a French Balcony especially for your first river cruise. This category ususally sits in the middle of the price point, and you may find on a subsequent river cruise that you would like an actual outside balcony, or that a Fixed Window Class cabin would do.

River cruising is incredibly scenic, and the ability to open the doors and watch the world drift past your cabin adds something special. However, we personally do not sit in our cabin to watch the world go by. If there is something to see, we are either in the lounge which has floor-to-ceiling windows, or we are on the sundeck. We use our cabin pretty much just to sleep and get ready for the day.

Additionally, on a river cruise you are often out all day exploring, and most – not all but most – river cruises sail after dark and there is nothing to see.

Another consideration of your time in port, is that many times your river cruise longship may be “rafted” in port next to another ship. This means that you could shake hands with the person on the next ship. In these port scenarios you have no view.

If you enjoy sitting outdoors with coffee or wine, then a Veranda or Twin Balcony cabin may be worth the upgrade.

And if you love space, privacy, and added service, suites can feel like a small luxury apartment on the river.

The good news is that river ships are small, intimate, and beautifully designed. No matter which cabin category you choose, you are never far from the view. For us however, we are always in the lounge or on the sundeck when there is something to see.

For years, river cruising has carried a stereotype. Quiet lounges. Early dinners. Slow-paced sightseeing designed only for retirees.

The reality today is very different.

Modern river cruising, especially with AmaWaterways, has evolved into something that appeals strongly to active adults who still want adventure, movement, and meaningful experiences while travelling in comfort.

12 Long-Haul Flight Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Travel Experience

12 Ways Travellers Make Long-Haul Flights More Miserable Than They Need To Be

Long-haul flights can be exhausting, but after personally experiencing many flights up to 16-hours in length, and then additional connections that make the travel over 30-hours in total, I have seen many travellers unintentionally make the experience harder on themselves than it needs to be. These are my observations, and I hope that they will help you if you are facing a 12+ hour flight.

Don’t walk around barefoot on the aircraft
Aircraft floors, especially around lavatories, are not as clean as many travellers assume. Wearing socks or footwear helps with hygiene and comfort. We take disposable slippers that we buy in bulk on Amazon. These are cheap, and they really do allow your feet to breathe and are much more comfortable than wearing clunky shoes for 16-hours.

Avoid carbonated drinks and gassy foods
Cabin pressure can increase bloating and discomfort. Fizzy drinks and certain foods may make long flights feel even more uncomfortable. I have stopped drinking soda/pop during flights and only water that comes out of a commercially sold bottle, or my own water bottle.

Stay hydrated during the flight
Cabin air is extremely dry. Drinking water regularly can help reduce fatigue, headaches, dry skin, and jet lag symptoms.

Charge devices before boarding
Passengers often rely heavily on in-seat power, but outlets do not always work. Arriving at the airport and at your destination with fully charged devices reduces stress. Charge your devices fully before boarding the aircraft - always - and carry a power-bank for emergencies. Be aware that more airlines and more countries now have very specific limits on power-banks and it could be confiscated at security. Additionally, note that most aircraft still only have USB connections for charging, so if your device has a different charging port/cable connection, you will need an adaptor cable that will allow you to connect your devices.

Dress in layers
Aircraft temperatures can fluctuate significantly during long-haul flights. Layers allow travellers to stay comfortable whether the cabin is hot or cold. On a recent flight I was “baking hot” and even though I asked the flight attendants if they could reduce the temperature, it was never comfortable. The flip side is being cold and that can be unbearable. Make sure you have a light coat in your carry-on and easy to reach.

Don’t rely solely on airline blankets or pillows
Bringing your own travel pillow, light blanket, or comfort items can make sleeping much easier. There are always questions about the cleanliness of airline blankets, and there are really cheap options on Amazon that you can wash at home and you can feel secure when you pull it up around your neck and face.

Get up and move periodically
Sitting for many hours without movement can lead to stiffness, swelling, and circulation issues. Short walks and stretching help. On long-haul flights I do calf exercises in between standing sessions and this plays a huge role in preventing potential blood clots in the legs.

Be mindful of alcohol consumption
Alcohol can increase dehydration and worsen jet lag. Moderate consumption is usually a better strategy on overnight flights. I do love a glass of red wine on a flight, and on most long-haul flights you can get several glasses. Keep it to a minimum and you will feel better on landing.

Choose comfortable clothing over fashion
Tight or restrictive clothing can become uncomfortable after many hours in a confined seat. I have over time collected a range of travel clothing including specific bottoms and tops for flights. I have many times seen folks in jeans for a long-haul flight and I personally feel that this would be - for me - the most uncomfortable and unforgiving fabric for flying.

Plan sleep strategically
Trying to align sleep with the destination time zone may help reduce jet lag and improve arrival energy levels. I am one that does not sleep well on an aircraft unless I am in Business Class on a lay-flat bed, and so I just align my thinking knowing that I am not going to sleep well. On any flight, when I arrive at destination, I try to push myself to stay awake until my regular sleeping time and that helps me to put my internal clock on the right path.

Pack essential items in your carry-on
Medications, chargers, toiletries, and a change of clothes should always remain accessible in case of delays or lost luggage. Further to that, we have all seen people rummaging through their carry-on looking for this cable, or earphones, etc. Have a small pouch of items that you will want at your seat ready to pull out of your backpack or carry-on so that you don't need to rummage around looking for this or that.

Prepare mentally for the flight experience
Patience, realistic expectations, and planning ahead can significantly improve the overall travel experience. Once I arrive at the airport to begin the travel experience, I give myself and my expectations over to chance. We cannot control what happens during our journey, but we can control how we react and/or deal with situations. Hopefully all goes to plan, but sometimes “stuff” happens and we have no choice but to deal with it.

BONUS - TIP #13
I never arrive for a flight of any length without movie/TV show content on my phone to watch. Why? Aircraft seat back entertainment does not always work. Recently on a flight home from Norway to Canada, a whole section of the Economy cabin had no access to the seat back entertainment and the flight crew could not fix it. For me, I also travel so much and the content on flights is pretty similar across airlines. I have most often watched what I am interested in, so bringing content that I have downloaded from my home streaming services is the best way to go for me. I often only use the seat back entertainment system for the flight map.

My Summary

Long-haul flights are rarely glamorous, even in premium cabins. However, many common in-flight frustrations are preventable with a little preparation. Simple habits such as staying hydrated, dressing comfortably, moving regularly, and planning ahead can make a major difference in how travellers feel both during the flight and upon arrival.

For frequent travellers, these small adjustments often separate an exhausting journey from a far more comfortable and manageable experience.
