What to do first when you embark your cruise.

Embarkation day can feel like a whirlwind - port check‑in, bag drop, and finally stepping into your cabin. And that first look when you walk into the cabin? Pure joy. But to truly settle in smoothly, there are a number of things you can do to help you get into vacation mode more quickly.  I am a bit structured when I first board the ship, but unstructured once I have got what I believe are essentials out of the way.

1. Verify your luggage delivery

Before unpacking, check if your bags made it inside. Sometimes they’re tucked away in a closet or just outside your door. If they’re not there yet, no worries - they’ll arrive soon.

2. Snap photos while it’s pristine

If you share on social media or create social content, capture a few shots or a quick video before your unpacking “stuff” takes over. Clean, stylish photos are perfect for social media or reminiscing later - plus, they vanish once the cabin fills up!

3. Confirm your bed setup

Is it the configuration you requested? Whether you booked singles or a double, inspect the layout. If you have extra companions, ensure any pull-out beds are accessible.

4. Feel out the pillows

Go beyond eyeing the bedding—test out the pillows. Too soft or too firm? Just ask your cabin steward. Many cruises offer alternative options at no charge.

5. Test everything

Do a quick check on lights, TV, shower, and flush. Catching issues early means faster fixes - and who knows, you may even qualify for an upgrade!

6. Sanitize high-touch spots

Remotes, phones, switches, drawer handles—these often-overlooked surfaces can harbour germs. A quick once-over with sanitizing wipes brings peace of mind.

7. Secure valuables

If you’re traveling with cash, jewelry, or passports, stow them in the cabin’s safe ASAP. It’s typically hidden in a drawer or closet—your safest haven on board.

8. Unpack to prevent wrinkles

Pop hangers into the closet and unpack right away. Most cruise lines prohibit irons, so hanging delicate items immediately is key. Store your suitcase under the bed to free up space.

9. Inspect the balcony

Step outside to scope out the view and ensure the area meets your expectations. If you booked an ocean-view cabin, you deserve a clean, full panorama—not partially obstructed scenery.

10. Stock the mini-fridge

Keep hydrated and happy - stow water bottles, snacks, or medications in the fridge. On warm sailing days, this small step makes a big difference.

PERSONAL NOTES:

  1. I do my full unpack as soon as I have cabin access.  I personally don't want to dig through my suitcase looking for this or that shirt.  I get it done immediately, then I can relax.
  2. I watch the safety/emergency information on the TV if available, while unpacking.  Some cruise line systems record if you have actually watched this or not.  Then, find your Muster Station and find out if you have to present in person or not.
  3. Now I do my tour of the ship and find where all the amenities are that I am interested in.  I HAVE done a full deck plan search of the ship before boarding, and know pretty much what I want to find.

Why all this matters - for me?
By tackling these steps early, you set the tone for a smooth, confident voyage. No scrambling later - it’s all about maximizing relaxation and minimizing hassle.
