To me, this is clickbait because the headline of the article is not the product, your attention is the product.  When you click, advertising revenue is generated. This is a whole other subject.

But, you have clicked, and you have read the horror these people have suffered on a cruise ship, but here’s what most articles leave out, and I am going to be blunt about it.

Cruise Ships Are NOT the Main Problem

Let’s start with facts from the CDC:

  • Cruise ship outbreaks account for about 1% of all reported Norovirus outbreaks
  • The overwhelming majority happen on land
  • Common outbreak locations include:
    • Schools and universities
    • Restaurants and food service
    • Healthcare facilities (hospitals, long-term care)
    • Childcare centres

So why do cruise ships get all the attention?

  • Strict reporting requirements (everything is tracked and public)
  • Thousands of people in one place makes a “good story”
  • Media amplification and revenue generation because you clicked

The reality: you are far more likely to encounter Norovirus on land than on a cruise.

Now the Blunt Truth About Norovirus

I told you I would be blunt.

Norovirus is not mysterious.

  • It spreads through the fecal–oral route
  • That means: someone didn’t wash their hands properly after using the bathroom

There’s no polite way to say this, so let’s not.

If people washed their hands properly after “Number 2,” most outbreaks wouldn’t happen.

Why It Spreads So Easily

  • Infected people shed huge amounts of virus in stool and vomit
  • It only takes a tiny amount to infect someone
  • The virus can survive on surfaces for days or even weeks

Once it starts, and begins to take hold, that’s why it shows up everywhere:

  • Handrails
  • Elevator buttons
  • Buffet tongs
  • Door handles

Cruise ships don’t create this.  People bring it onboard and spread it.

The Biggest Misconception: Hand Sanitizer

Let’s be very clear:

  • Hand sanitizer is not reliable against Norovirus
  • It does NOT effectively kill the virus

What works:

  • Soap and water
  • Proper hand washing

This is not optional. This is the difference between getting sick and not.

My Personal Experience

I don’t rely on luck, and I follow strict rules:

  • No touching my face, mouth, nose, eyes, without washing my hands thoroughly first
  • Always wash hands with soap and water before eating
  • At buffets:
    • Use a napkin for utensils OR
    • Eat with knife and fork only OR
    • Wash hands again before eating

I have never been sick, and although I have never been on what I would call an “outbreak ship”, I have known of people that are confined to cabin for the very symptoms.

It’s no coincidence that I have not been sick, it is, in my opinion, my strict rules that has kept me healthy and well.

The Bottom Line – These points may shock you:

  • Cruise ships account for ~1% of outbreaks, but get 90% of the headlines (Clickbait)
  • Norovirus is mostly a human hygiene problem, not a cruise problem
  • The real issue is simple, people not washing their hands properly

Cruise lines clean aggressively.  But they cannot fix poor personal hygiene.  Only you can.
