My Top 3 Cruise Experiences After Visiting 50+ Countries and All 7 Continents

As a Travel Advisor, I am often asked a simple question that is surprisingly difficult to answer.

"Of all the places you've travelled, what was your favourite?"

I've now visited more than 50 countries and all seven continents. I've crossed oceans on luxury cruise ships, sailed rivers through the heart of Europe, and explored some of the most remote corners of our planet aboard expedition vessels.

I've been fortunate to experience incredible destinations that many people only dream about.

Yet when I really think about it, three journeys stand above the rest, the ones that come to mind are not because they were the most luxurious, not because they were the most expensive, not because they had the best food or the biggest cabins - they stand out because they fundamentally changed how I viewed the world.

Number One: Antarctica with HX Expeditions

If someone told me I could only take one more trip in my lifetime, I would choose Antarctica.

Without hesitation.

Antarctica is unlike anywhere else on Earth.  There are no cities.  There are no roads.  There are no shopping districts, souvenir stands, or tourist attractions.  There is simply nature on a scale that is almost impossible to comprehend.

As your expedition ship navigates through towering icebergs and pristine channels, you quickly realize that you are entering a world that belongs entirely to nature.

The wildlife encounters are extraordinary.  Penguins going about their daily lives.  Whales surfacing beside your Zodiac.  Seals resting on floating ice.  Seabirds soaring above dramatic glaciers.

What makes Antarctica special isn't simply seeing wildlife.  It's seeing wildlife that has absolutely no fear of humans because humans have never been a significant part of their environment.

The silence is something I will never forget.  Standing ashore in Antarctica, you can experience moments where there is almost complete silence except for distant ice cracking or the occasional call of a bird.

In our modern world, that level of quiet simply doesn't exist anymore.

I often tell clients that Antarctica is not a vacation.  It's an experience.

Visiting Antarctica changes your perspective on the planet, conservation, climate, and humanity's place within the natural world.

For me, it remains the most awe-inspiring destination I have ever visited.

Why the Northwest Passage Is One of the Rarest Voyages You Can Take

Number Two: The Nile River with Uniworld

My second choice surprises many people.

The Nile River is not just a cruise.  It is a journey through thousands of years of human civilization.

Most destinations offer history.  Egypt offers ancient history on a scale that is difficult to comprehend.

Every day seemed to reveal another site I had read about in school textbooks.

  • The temples at Luxor.
  • The Valley of the Kings.
  • Karnak Temple.
  • The Temple of Edfu.
  • The Temple of Philae.

These aren't ruins hidden behind glass.

You walk among them.  You stand beside them.  You experience them.

The Nile itself is fascinating.

While modern Egypt surrounds you, the river often feels timeless.  Farmers still work fields much as they have for generations.  Traditional feluccas sail the river.  Children wave from the riverbanks.  Life along the Nile unfolds much as it has for centuries.

Uniworld's intimate ships allow you to immerse yourself in the destination while enjoying exceptional service and comfort.

The result is a journey that combines luxury travel with one of the greatest historical experiences available anywhere on Earth.

If Antarctica changed my understanding of nature, Egypt changed my understanding of history.

Number Three: The Douro River with Viking

The Douro River may be one of Europe's best-kept secrets.

Many travellers know the Rhine.  Many know the Danube.  Far fewer have experienced the Douro.  And that's exactly part of its charm.

The Douro Valley in Portugal is breathtaking.  Terraced vineyards climb steep hillsides that have been producing wine for centuries.  Small villages appear around river bends.  Historic estates overlook the valley.

The scenery feels more intimate and authentic than many of Europe's more famous river cruise routes.

What impressed me most was how relaxed the experience felt.

  • There are fewer large cities.
  • Fewer crowds.
  • Fewer tourist buses.
  • Instead, there is a slower pace that encourages you to simply enjoy the journey.
  • The wine culture is extraordinary.
  • After all, this is the birthplace of Port wine.
  • The food is exceptional.
  • The people are welcoming.

And the landscapes rival anything I have seen elsewhere in Europe.

Viking's destination-focused approach fits the Douro perfectly.  This is not a river cruise filled with grand capitals and major tourist attractions.  It is a river cruise focused on culture, scenery, wine, food, and authentic Portuguese experiences.

For travellers who think they have "done Europe," the Douro often becomes one of their favourite discoveries.

What Makes These Three Journeys Different?

When I look back on all my travels, I notice something interesting.

These three experiences are completely different from one another.

Antarctica represents the raw power of nature.

The Nile represents the story of human civilization.

The Douro represents culture, tradition, and the joy of slowing down.

Each destination excels in an area where few others can compete.

Together, they remind me why I love travel.

Travel isn't just about seeing places.

It's about gaining perspective.

It's about understanding the world a little differently when you return home.

After more than 50 countries and seven continents, these three journeys continue to stand above the rest.

And if you're looking for a truly life-changing travel experience, any one of them deserves a place on your bucket list.

Thinking About One of These Journeys?

I've personally experienced all three and would be happy to help you determine which destination best matches your interests, travel style, and budget.

Whether you're dreaming of Antarctica's glaciers, Egypt's ancient wonders, or Portugal's stunning Douro Valley, I'd love to help you plan an unforgettable adventure.
