Overnight Flights to Europe: How to Arrive Ready for Your Cruise
If you’re flying from North America to Europe for a cruise, you’re likely facing an overnight flight that lands on European soil early in the morning, the next day. While this can be exciting, it also means navigating jet lag, exhaustion, and an awkward gap from the arrival of your flight to hotel check-in. Here’s how to make the most of your first day and adjust quickly to the new time zone—ensuring you’re refreshed and ready to board your cruise the next day.
This is MY tried, tested, and successful way of dealing with jet lag at the beginning of my cruise.
The Reality of Overnight Flights
Most flights from North America to Europe depart in the evening and land early the next morning. That sounds great—until you realize:
❌ You likely didn’t sleep well on the plane.
❌ You’re arriving at your hotel hours before check-in (often around 7–10 AM).
❌ You still have a long day ahead before bedtime in your new time zone.
The Key to Beating Jet Lag? Keep Moving!
Rather than crashing at the hotel lobby or paying extra for an early check-in, here’s the best strategy to adjust quickly:
1. Drop Your Bags & Get Out
Most hotels will store your luggage if your room isn’t ready—take advantage of this. Drop your bags and hit the streets!
Research what to do and where to go before boarding your flight. It would not hurt to download some Google maps to your smartphone to have ready on your arrival.Don’t hit the streets without a plan of action.
2. Walk, Explore & Stay Active
Your goal is to push through the exhaustion. Walking is the best way to fight jet lag and take in some sights at the same time.
✔️ Visit a nearby landmark, park, or local attraction.
✔️ Find a café, but only sit for a quick coffee, snack, or meal—don’t get too comfortable!
✔️ Avoid naps or lying down, no matter how tempting.
3. Return to Your Hotel Around Check-In Time
Aim to return to your hotel by 3 PM or later, when your room is likely ready. Freshen up, but don’t go straight to sleep.
4. Stay Awake Until 9 PM Local Time
The hardest part—staying awake! But this – to me - is the secret to adjusting fast.
✔️ Keep moving, have an early dinner, and avoid long periods of rest.
✔️ Power through until at least 9 PM, then enjoy a full, deep sleep.
Why This Works - For ME
Yes, it’s tough. But pushing through that first day allows your body and mind to sync with the local time quickly. By the next morning, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed, adjusted, and ready for your cruise adventure!
Planning to fly in the day of your cruise? Think twice!Arriving a day early not only gives you time to recover but also protects you from airline delays and cancellations. It’s the best way to ensure you don’t miss embarkation day.
If you do fly in and arrive the day of cruise embarkation, follow the same plan as above, and push yourself to the evening and don’t crash on the bed as soon as you get into your cabin.
This plan of attack for dealing with and eliminating jet lag has worked for me for many years now. I hope it works for you too!
