Going through airport security is often rushed and stressful. Passengers are focused on removing shoes, taking out laptops, and getting through the line as quickly as possible. In that brief moment when your belongings are separated from you, however, valuables can easily disappear or be forgotten.

One of the most common mistakes travellers make is placing loose items directly into the security tray. Phones, passports, wallets, and small electronics sitting exposed in an open bin can easily be overlooked or taken while your attention is elsewhere.

A much safer habit is to place your phone, wallet, and passport inside a small zippered pouch or a zippered pocket of your carry-on bag before reaching the conveyor belt. When valuables are secured inside a bag, they are far less likely to be forgotten and much harder for anyone else to access.

Many airports today also do not require phones to be removed from bags during screening. Laptops or large electronics may still need to come out depending on the airport and screening technology, but phones rarely need to be placed loose in a tray. Leaving them in your bag keeps them protected and reduces the chance of losing them.

Another important habit is to watch your tray enter the scanning machine before you step through the metal detector or body scanner. If you proceed too quickly, your belongings may exit the scanner while you are still being screened.

This matters especially if security asks for additional screening or uses a hand wand. During those moments, your attention is on the screening process while your tray may already be moving to the other side of the machine.  If you are travelling with a companion, and either you or your companion make it through screening first, they should be the one watching over both your belongings.

Many people reading this article have travelled often and never had anything bad like this happen, but trust me, as a Travel Advisor I hear all sorts of stories, and things like this DO happen.  Just because you have been lax in how you handle these small items and not had and incident does not mean you won't have an incident in the future.  There can be nothing worse than losing a phone or a passport during your travels.

A few simple habits can help protect your belongings at airport security:

  • Place phone, passport, wallet, and other valuables inside a zippered pouch or compartment before reaching the belt

  • Avoid placing loose valuables directly into security trays

  • Keep phones inside your carry-on bag unless specifically instructed otherwise

  • Watch your tray enter the scanner before you walk through the detector

  • Stay close to the exit of the scanner so you can collect your belongings immediately

  • Double-check that you have your passport, phone, and wallet before leaving the area

Most airport security experiences are routine and safe. However, a small amount of awareness during these few minutes can prevent a stressful situation and ensure your trip begins smoothly.

The best rule is simple: keep your most important items zipped, contained, and always within sight.
